Lawyers will be the last to be replaced because someone actually needs to read the boring shit that AI wrote and see if it is correct or not.
It's interesting that the creatives are going to be the most fucked which I don't think would've been people's first instincts with AI, but i can't see a lot of companies hiring graphic designrs or copywriters going forward.

This is the post of someone who doesn't understand what transactional attorneys do.
The lawyers barely write anything. They're paid to read it and make sure it is correct (and point out where it is not).
AI probably slightly decreases the amount of work but not by that much, because transactional attorneys are already just re-using forms and copying and pasting texts.

It's almost like this bort is filled with a bunch of middle-aged lawyers who possess almost no transferrable non-legal skills and are rightfully terrified by what they intuitively realize is coming down the pike for them in the next few years, and they are trying to quell their rising existential dread and terror by engaging in a bunch of very obvious group cope.

But how will the AI know what the deal points are and what the business pain points are?
It seems like your contention is that businesses are just going to enter into contracts without a human being thinking about the terms or reading the contracts.
Like imagine you're in-house counsel for Chilis and you're doing a contract for a new trucking vendor. You think that the CEO is just going to say "Hey AI, go spin us up a contract with this new vendor" and then he is going to sign it without reading it?
Where is AI going to learn enough about trucking vendor contracts and your business to realize that in California the truck drivers have to be your employees because you entered into a settlement decree 10 years ago agreeing to that? How are they going to know that for your self-owned restaurants, the invoicing needs to go to corporate and be paid within 10 days? How would they know that you can't have more than 2 cases of shrimp on a truck because your restaurants don't have the freezer space to carry more?
I think we're a hell of a long way off from that, and once we get there, we all have nothing left to do but sip mai tais on the beach so who cares?

Ideally we will find a way to implement UBI and live lives of unparalleled leisure, that don’t require us to do anything because machines have solved all of our problems and human labor and innovation is no longer necessary. Most people’s jobs suck and they would be happy to play all the time. It is also possible the people controlling the machines will use them to exterminate the masses that are no longer needed. Either way, I won’t have to work so it will be an improvement. There’s no realistic butlerian jihad scenario that will prevent the creation of superhuman AI. It would require too much international cooperation

I don't think people are going to go, "I'm going to see that new play tomorrow night written by Open AI."
But look around your room right now and see how many images you have. Listen to all the advertisements you hear. Read all the text in your email inbox.

Neither could the vast majority of human lawyers who are currently practicing in this country.
But here's the difference:
- Ask yourself how AI was doing with those tasks a mere two years ago.
- Now ask yourself how well you think AI will be performing those tasks two years from now.

Why do people keep saying this? We’ve been hearing the same predictions about self-driving cars for the past 10-15 years, they’re still nowhere close to displacing truckers and Uber drivers. Maybe AI can do 80% of the analysis and drafting that lawyers can but getting it from 80% to 98% could take many decades.

Rate of progress. AI has advanced significantly even compared to 2020 and it’s largely a function of available compute. Benchmark performance for LLMs rapidly saturates even now, and we are likely to see a 10,000x in training compute by 2030. Combined with improved training techniques (like DeepSeek cutting training cost by an order of magnitude for LLMs), it’s not hard to predict all sorts of radical performance increases going forward. I say this as a self-driving skeptic who thought the timelines that were discussed previously were overly optimistic since cars need robust, human like sensorimotor function to handle edge cases.

"Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, is preparing to give a behind-closed-doors briefing to US officials next week where the company will discuss the latest developments in its technology. Advances reportedly include its work on chatbots capable of PhD-level thinking... These bots are growing increasingly sophisticated, with expectations that AI chatbots will soon be able to perform tasks such as building a working app from scratch or engaging in long-term planning. This emerging form of AI could begin to do complex work normally taken on by a human, such as computer programming."

Again, you're misunderstanding what transactional attorneys do.
Yes, AI can build a purchase contract from scratch. I don't think any of doubt that if you ask them for an IP assignment contract, or a ground lease, or a stock incentive plan. They'll be amazingly full contracts with beautiful reps and warranties.
But how is AI going to know if the company can actually make those reps and warranties? What if you're selling the business and they ask if anyone might have any ownership claims and you had a partner who left the business 4 years ago and no one has heard from them?
Is your contention that the AI is just going to know this? And then the AI is going to communicate with the other side's AI, and they'll come to an agreement? And no human is ever going to read what the AI wrote?
Or if you're doing a sponsorship contract for Oracale arena and in the licensing document AI produces it says that no employees of any entities at Oracle can wear any athletic wear other than Adidas. Is the AI going to know that Steph Curry is #1 priority of the ownership group and he has a deal with Under Armour and its going to be ugly if you sign that?
And if you did sign the agreement, you seem to be implying that no one at the company is reading the contract. So is your contention that the AI is going to watch the basketball game, see Steph Curry wearing Under Armor warmup gear, and send a notice of breach?
It just seems like you're naive about what transactional attorneys above a very junior level actually do, and you haven't really thought through how your world (where no humans think about or even actually read the contracts) would work.

To be fair,
CR we're saying the same thing -- out of all of the jobs in the world, transactional attorneys will be among the very last to be replaced by AI.
Transactional attorneys perform a wide array of extremely complex and nuanced functions and add all sorts of incredible yet almost ethereal forms of value that very few humans (let alone mere AI programs) can even begin to fathom, let alone hope to properly emulate.
I'm just glad that you and I both know these things.

Thanks for walking me through how those scenarios would work in your vision.
I'm clear now and understand why you're right.
