Was reading over the coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD. On page 130 it says there will be no military draft for now, but they will follow the Swedish system for making military service be seen as competitive and prestigious.
Wasn't sure what that meant, so I did some digging and found this article that says Sweden has to turn away military recruits because they've made army service something which is reserved for the best and brightest. So those who are selected are seen as elites and get a great start on their professional lives.

lol, sweden can do that because it is the size of fucking sweden, if germany wants to be taken seriously as a counterweight to Rusia in Europe then they can't make military service exclusive

The downside of this approach is that, if there's a war, the cream of your nation's youth dies off. And if a country sees its best and brightest getting blown up in drone videos, they are more likely to cave in.
