two films, but they are only 72 and 75 minutes. this is sort of the musical counterpart to the failed filmmaker themes in 'american movie,' which also came out in 1999. american movie took place in wisconsin; this is in minneapolis.

it did not sell well, and did not lead to a record deal. the second documentary ends at its release, so, that part is not made entirely clear (though it's fairly obvious).

they were well-received when they were released, but they never got picked up by a major distributor, and have mostly just knocked around the sundance channel/film festival circuit since then.
