In legal writing you're supposed to surround informal speech with quotes. "Common sense" originally referred to the mental faculty by which impressions created by data from more than one sense are formed. For example, you can get ideas about size through sight (looking at an object), by touch (feeling an object), and by hearing (louder and lower noises are often created by things of bigger size). So size as such is properly an impression of the common sense. "Common sense" meaning "conventional wisdom" is just a slang term.
