It's actually not good for them to pile up, and in fact the #1 cause of walrus deaths is being crushed to death by other walruses. There's no selective pressure at work here at all. The only reason they come on land is to sleep, but whales figured out how to sleep the water. Why can't walruses evolve to sleep in the goddamn water?
