I watched "Tuner" last night and its mediocrity highlights how bad film has become with 94% on RT. It's completely formulaic, paint by numbers with multiple deus ex machinas working in parallel that ruin the masterful opening.
One of the only negative reviews put it perfectly that this was a calling card movie for the director to get attention from studios as a workmanlike operator vs flashy avant garde shit (eg that abomination with Anne Hathaway "Mother Mary" which was also 90% somehow but at least original).
The main character makes a dozen idiotic decisions in a row that prevent the ending from meaning anything. It's like a bunch of random coincidental shit happened, on top of horrific decision making, but none of it ultimately meant anything life-altering to anyone involved.
Yeah I felt pretty negative about it afterward, the story ended up retarded. But it had elements of a better film. Some of the cinematography was good. The director is a dorky canadian jew

it captures the essence of Philly better than Rocky does. we've had threads about movies that best represent each city, like mighty ducks for minneapolis or scarface for miami. subjectively I would put TP above Rocky for Philly

keep meaning to watch Tuner, but haven't.
tried watching Trading Places recently for the first time in years. not as good as i remembered it. has high peaks but a lot of valleys.
hated Tony. let's make a movie about that famous chef and television personality. but let's make it about some other boring part of his life no one cares about - him failing to get a scholarship and struggling to get laid as a teenager.

The "boring part of his life" is heavily featured in multiple episodes of season 1 of "A Cook's Tour". He literally attributes that RI townie experience as the most formative part of his entire life/career as a writer and chef.

Yeah I can see that. We've been exposed to more chef serials and reality shows than probably any other service industry plus The Bear. There is probably nothing new to talk about even if it happened irl
