This is the latest AI-driven phishing scheme that will fuck over someone you know
Some idiot uses Google to find a website (eg, ChatGPT) instead of typing the url
Google surfaces sponsored links above any authentic url that look like OpenAI but contain fake links to download or whatever that expose your entire pc to malicious actors.
This is happening constantly now because hackers use AI to automate surfacing Google sponsored links and redo it immediately once enough users report phishing and it's removed
I've seen technical literate people fall for this recently because they're just too lazy to type a url; instead googling every website and mindlessly hitting the first link

this has been going on for years - full on replica sites built and advertising with a different letter in the domain etc they make untold billions from pure fraud.
Their display ad network is even worse - possibly the most fraudulent operation on the internet.

This is true but it's exponentially worse due to the lure of AI and idiots trying to vibe code whose mindset is opening up their computer to let AI do everything

Probably technically possible. But people have already tried it and lost. There is a law that prevents an online service from being treated as the publisher of unlawful information supplied by a third party. I'm sure there is another route depending on exactly what happens.
