I think people often treat Ancient Greece as if it appeared in isolation, when a lot of its structural substrate was shaped by deep Aegean and indigenous Anatolian continuities. The Greek world was in constant contact with older cultures across western Anatolia, the Levant, Egypt, and the Near East, and that contact mattered. Ancient Greek is not just a gateway into “Greece” narrowly understood; it opens onto an entire eastern Mediterranean archive of exchange, adaptation, and inherited forms.
