The decision to include the Old Testament in the Bible was a big whiff early on

It's even more ludicrous when you realize Christians included, as canon, Jewish texts that jews never thought were canon. Imagine Mike Huckabee quoting Maccabees to room full of Israeli Jews.
But more to the point why include it at all if you're only going to quote isolated snippets with even trying to understand their context? Christian theologians just mined the OT for quotes they thought were useful and were just like "wtf?" when it came to the other 99%. Erasmus had an uneasy relationship with it

Your critique of Christian authors selectively quoting the Hebrew Bible is valid, but Jews have done the same thing, and Jesus did too. Saint Augustine argued that God, the ultimate author of scripture, could have chosen the same words to mean infinitely many things, so fanciful interpretations and even quotations out of context are fine, according to him, if they serve to establish and elucidate Christian teaching. As for the Old Testament itself, you need the Old Testament to explain why Christ was born a Jew and ministered first to other Jews, and you need the Old Testament to explain the concept of the Messiah.
