Change your 10 year window to 1999 to 2009, you'd be down almost 20 percent.

United States 1950-2001 was an absolute powerhouse, I do not expect the same domination for the next 50 years, not of that magnitude.

Not if returns were negative when/in the years immediately following when you started --i.e.-- a 22 yo in 2008 starting his 401K right as the stock market tanked. This also isn't true if you compensate by saving/investing more later.

All the hypo supposes is that you start investing in your early 20s. The "miracle of compounding" is thanks to markets, which obviously fluctuate dramatically and do not offer consistent returns/

YOUR personal rate of return is different from the market's average rate of return, based on a variety of factors, such as the precise timing/market direction of when you first began investing.

False.

Here's a 5-year example:

Joe invests $1000 in 2002. The market grows 10% each year. In 2007, he thus has about $1600 after 5 years.

Jim invests in 2008. The market drops 38%. He's down to $620.

It increases 18% in 2009, so he's now up to $731.60. In 2010 it increases 11%, bringing him up to about $810. In 2011, he sees a 7% increase, so he's now at 867. He's up 5% in 2012, bringing him up to about $910.

Joe is thus up 60% in 5 years; Jim DOWN nearly 10%.

There was no difference except for when they began investing.

But she is 29 years old and this is her first year of contributing to a roth.

These assumptions that ignore inflation and assume 10%+ real returns are asinine. The S&P returned something like 5% real over the last century.

True, the idea that investing early is a good idea sure didn't apply to anybody who started investing 15 years ago. Would've been better off spending the money / having fun.

Right. The person who started investing earlier is still in a better position than the person who spent it all.

I started investing seriously in 2006 or so, and sure, I got hammered in the couple of years following that. But after the crash I still had something (didn't sell) and it's since recovered. That portion of my savings wouldn't exist if I hadn't saved it early.

I still think it's more credited to maintain liquidity and invest in a future business than to put money into the market, assuming you can't do both and assuming you're under 35.

I feel your pain. I've got like $41K. At least I can backdoor so it'll be $47K soon.

The real way I could see myself getting a big Roth IRA would be to get axed from law, and then start converting $30K or so a year from my 401k during a number of years with little to no income.

not really.

my parents had very little just 20 years ago and now have a $3-4 million net worth. just make sure you get on a career path that is pretty lucrative and you'll be fine even if you don't save a penny until the age of 35-40.

The 19 bro isn't doubling the 27 year old bro or anything. You can still beat the average early starter by just putting way more money in. Most people who start investing at 19 only have chump change to put in.

The real reason this chart is dumb is because of inflation. You're comparing 2,000 dollars someone put in at 19 to 2,000 someone out in 46 years later and acting like it's the same thing

Yea 10 percent is retarded, but the gist of the argument is right. Early investments have a bigger bang for their buck when it's said and done. Invest as much as you can, as early as you can, in a low cost index. Profit (when you are old as fuck).

I agree generally that returns will be lower. But if you asked me in 08 if we were fucked I'd say yes - and the market has gone crazy since then. I thought trump would lead to a market correction, and yet we have the trump rally.

noob investor question, but isn't this idea kind of self perpetuating?

Everyone believes in investing in the S&P 500 via mutual funds and index funds -> the market consistently goes up over time because people are always buying (direct deposit into 401k) -> everyone believe in investing in the market.

Future is impossible to predict. Best call is to diversify.

I fully fund the Roth IRA each year (future tax advantage), fund the 401k enough to capture the match and then some (current tax advantage) and also have a few rental houses which cash flow decently now and will be paid off by retirement (inflation hedge plus tax advantage for the next couple of decades).

Investment compounding is the single biggest scam the investment/retirement community uses to grab your money.

The Future value investment analysis assumes a guaranteed return with zero draw-down. The overall markets (S%P), and less than 1% of stocks follow the interest rate return curve.

The market curve more closely follows the short-memory timespan which is roughty 10 years for each new generation (87, 00, 09, ...next?)

Just use a 20% return the first 8 years and use 1% return the next 50 years bro.
