Judge voids Trump’s IRS settlement, refers AG Blanche/others for discipline

Date: July 13th, 2026 1:08 PM Author: cumstein WASHINGTON, July 13 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Monday voided βPresident Donald Trump's settlement with the IRS that gave him and his companies sweeping tax protections and initially set up a nearly $1.8 billion government βfund to pay victims of so-called βgovernment weaponization that was later abandoned. U.S. District β Judge Kathleen Williams found that Trump and the βIRS, which he oversees as president, were not βtruly adverse to each other as is required in civil lawsuits under the U.S. Constitution. Williams referred a βTrump lawyer in the case and senior βJustice Department officials who signed off on the settlement to β state bar authorities to determine if their actions violated legal ethics rules.
"This action was never about a party seeking judicial resolution of a βlegal issue βor a β factual dispute," Williams wrote. The judge said it was instead an attempt βto "provide some legitimacy to an agreement βto β confer immunity to people and entities affiliated with the president and to earmark billions of dollars β from American βtaxpayers to redress grievances not βdefined in the law."
