part of this is because zero latinx people know who that is, and latinxes are 20% of the population. but latinxes love elvis, so, he's doing okay in cultural memory terms. but ray charles? sam cooke? jackie wilson? otis redding? bb king? nope. pre-rap black music is slipping down a cultural memory-hole.

there was a big effort to get him canonized as a country music legend in the 00's/early-10's because of the country album he did. that album is fine, but it's also kind of boring, and the effort never took off among actual country listeners.
