Paradise by the Dashboard Light is actually a 180 song, it's about him being a horny teenager and promising to love his GF forever in order to get her to secks him, and then hating her

"

I couldn't take it any longer, Lord, I was crazed

And when the feeling came upon me like a tidal wave

Started swearing to my God and on my mother's grave

That I would love you to the end of time

I swore I would love you to the end of time

So now I'm praying for the end of time

To hurry up and arrive

'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you

I don't think that I can really survive

I'll never break my promise or forget my vow

But God only knows what I can do right now

I'm praying for the end of time, it's all that I can do

Praying for the end of time so I can end my time with you

"

https://youtu.be/C11MzbEcHlw (it's long but 180)

paradise by the dashboard light works in a sense like you said upthread but there are certain Old Things that fail the test of time for some reason. I played it one time for millennials and after I was like, “never again.” Also millennial Women can’t get through the godfather. But the godfather doesn’t suck imo. Critics hated meatloaf afaik.

A millennial Woman can hear Bat Out of Hell and get it in thirty seconds: huge feelings, huge voice, doomed romance, sweaty theater-kid melodrama, motorcycles, Catholic guilt, prom-night apocalypse. It is stupid, but it is never boring. It wants to be loved. It grabs you by the collar and screams the thesis. It has an on-ramp. It is camp. It is karaoke tragedy. It is maximalist. You can enjoy it ironically, sincerely, or both.

The Godfather does not want to be loved. It wants you to sit quietly while men in brown rooms with liver-colored suits discuss obligation, insult, silence, respect, and the correct distance between a son and a father. Its emotional world is subterranean. Nobody says the thing. Nobody explains the thing. The women are mostly trapped outside the ritual chamber while the men perform inheritance, blood, hierarchy, and doom in whispers. The Godfather has no on-ramp unless you already care about fathers, sons, family firms, old-world honor codes, ethnic assimilation, power without joy, and the spiritual rot of becoming competent. It is not “relatable.” It is a 180-minute funeral for American upward mobility. It asks for patience. It rewards silence. It has no sparkle. No wink. No meme tempo. No emotional subtitles.

Meat Loaf says: “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that.”

The Godfather says: “ Don’t ask me about my business”

Meat Loaf works because he screams the wound and sells the bandage in the same chorus, but The Godfather gives them the real thing: a father making law out of love, a son becoming the knife he thought he could hold cleanly, a wife staring at a door and still not understanding she has already been widowed by power, so they call it slow, they call it men talking, they miss the murder inside the manners, and the film sits there cold and perfect, a black suit at the edge of the room, judging every soft little soul that needed the tragedy to sing. I say this as someone who’s been critical of Coppola on the past.

Todd Rundgren who produced it literally thought it was a joke and said he tried to make it sound like a parody of Bruce Springsteen.

I think I also read somewhere that he (Rundgren) made more money off the producer royalties from Bat Out of Hell than anything else he ever did in his career.

I straight up never understood this album even a little bit. It's musically awful. The songwriting is some of the worst ever. And yet it hits boomers deep in their soul and sort of encapsulates the entire meaning of their lives. I think the album is about the jollity of the boomer condition and how failing upwards makes you a better person. There's something so quintessentially boomer about it all. But I find it unlistenable even if it tells a tale all boomers can relate to deeply.

The writer (Jim Steinman) also wrote Total Eclipse of the Heart which is very similar to the Meat Loaf stuff. I guess he found a schtick that worked and went with it. I will give him some credit for being incredibly uncool…I can’t imagine anything less hip than Bat Out of Hell. As Cowgod hinted at above there is a market out there for bombastic theatre-kid stuff like this.

The people who are wired that way can't help it. They're just like that all the time. They just are theatre people and their jokes are cheesy in real life and they see the whole world through this bombastic lens and everything is an over the top melodrama. This is part of the boomer ethos. They won so much they need to invent some faux pain they went through. This is the story of how they suffered maybe that one time but overcame due to their inherent awesomeness.

The “hero dying in a motorcycle crash” is very 50s Teen Angel too. Boomers loved 50s retro like Happy Days, Grease, etc. Remember the Boomers were the last generation to experience urban America before white flight.

Meat Loaf intentionally gained 60 pounds (27 kg) to fail his physical examination for the Vietnam War draft. Despite this strategy, he still received his notice to appear before his local draft board, but chose to ignore it.[8]
