At least 11 killed, dozens shot across Chicago in violent July Fourth

July Fourth was a violent 24 hours across Chicago. At least eleven people have been killed and over 50 hurt in separate shootings.

Among the incidents, eight people being shot in the Little Italy neighborhood overnight.

Police were called to 1300 block of West Hastings around 1: 44 a.m. in the city’s Little Italy neighborhood for reports of multiple people shot

According to police, there was an exchange of gunfire between two people at the Abla Homes Housing Complex.

Eight people were struck. Their ages range from 74 to 18. All are expected to survive.

Just before 2 a.m., officers found six people shot on the West Side in the 100 block of South Menard.

Two women, ages 18 and 20, a 15-year-old boy and three men between the ages of 23 and 25 were transported to different hospitals and are expected to recover.

Later Friday morning, a man and woman were found shot to death in the 3400 block of East 87th Street, police said. Police have not provided any additional information.

In the early hours of Friday, a 43-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 1200 block of West Washburne around 2 a.m. He was taken to the hospital were he was pronounced dead, according to police.

A 16-year-old was wounded in a separate shooting in the 1200 block of South Central Park around 1:40 a.m.

Police said officers responded to an apartment complex and found the teen with a gun shot wound to the head.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A 34-year-old was shot around 1 a.m. in the 6200 block of South Laflin. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police said he was later pronounced dead.

Additionally, a 43-year-old man was found shot in the 1200 block of West Washburne around 2 a.m. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Before midnight, a 59-year-old woman, a woman in her 40s and a 29-year-old woman were standing outside in the 900 block of North LeClaire when a person began shooting. The 59-year-old woman was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. The 29-year-old was shot in the torso and is in fair condition. The woman in her 40s was shot in the head and hip and is in critical condition.

Around the same time in the 6000 block of South Winchester Avenue, police said a 35-year-old man was shot and killed during an argument with another man.

Also, around 11 p.m. on Thursday, a 30-year-old man was in a crowd of people standing in the street in the 8400 block of South Kerfoot Avenue when he was shot by an unidentified person. Police said the man sustained a gunshot wound to the torso and was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

And early on the morning of July Fourth, two women and a child died following a shooting in Chicago’s Grand Crossing neighborhood. 46-year-old Nakeeshia Strong, and cousin, 24-year-old Caprice Edwards and an 8-year-old boy were killed when a group of people fired into a home in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue.

A 5-year-old and a 7-year-old remain in critical condition.

Family members said Edwards died while shielding her 1-year-old from the shooting.

Over the Fourth of July weekend last year, from 6 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2023 to 11:59 on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, Chicago police data indicated there were 57 people shot, eight of those were fatal.
