I was traveling with three other people, all of us just taking a 1-2 day break. Everyone else there was a scuba diver, and you had to be at least PADI level 4 to dive there, and there were instructors who could take you up to level 5. The divers were all Euros with tons of expensive gear. If u weren't PADI level 4 you could snorkel, though I don't recommend it at low tide unless you enjoy lionfish. There's also trash in the water, obviously, because the Indonesian mainland is right there. Little empty packets of Pantene shampoo in ur underwater pics unless u are PADI level 4.
Now I see there are bunch of other resorts. That makes sense, because the resort we booked was full of mosquitos. There's no groundwater on the island, so they had to use catch basins with rain water for everything. It sucks when there are mosquito larvae in your bathwater. Nets and mosquito coils didn't work. The newer resorts probably treat their water and take other measures to control the problem.
What worked was walking to the side of the island that hadn't been developed. The people over there were either living in huts on the beach, or they were living on the beach without huts. Most of the fishermen didn't have huts, they just slept on the beach. No groundwater = NOMOSQUITOS. So we ended up drinking with some fishermen and listening to stories about Filipino pirates before going to sleep on the beach.
Now u can't even do that. Fuck that whole region. |
