Central motivation for myself is to get "rich".

However I do not spend much money and, upon reflection, the un-examined motivators beneath are 1) an aspiration to compare favorably with other men, and 2) a fear that as an old person I will suffer materially

Both are irrational insecurity. There is no competition with other men; I invent that out of thin air. And the fear is only a token of lack of faith. Not only is there little cause for the fear, I have never even known a person in my personal ambit who has ever been without a sufficient home or food or medicine. Its practically unthinkable.

My central motivation for my children is that they excel academically. Why? To earn some credentials for college admission. Why? Some irrational belief that college prestige translates to life happiness -- something for which there is absolutely no evidence.

If I stopped being driven by a desire to enrich myself, and stopped driving my children to sing & dance for their teachers' approval... my life might look a lot different.

This here seems like dangerous thinking. Why don't you shut up and watch some NFL highlights.

My motivation to earn is to give my kids opportunities I didn’t have to build wealth using the aspects of the U.S. economic system that greatly favor capital/the wealthy. If I ever got to that level of wealth (which I would define as roughly $20-25M in 2024 dollars) I would not be able to continue doing what I do and would instead do things that I find more interesting and fulfilling. I’m motivated to have my kids excel academically just because it provides them with a set of tools that are useful in adult life that is as much or more a question of intellectual confidence and having a set of experiences and references that can be useful to communicate/connect with/persuade peers than it is a question of the actual academic skills, though I appreciate being able to outsource teaching them grammar rules and algebra. But it’s not fundamentally different than teaching them to be physically fit and coordinated or teaching them to cook and appreciate healthy food.

see, the way my insecurities work is that I see your post, full of good points, and only take-away that your definition of rich is 20-25M. I would like simply to be a TTT millionaire - and may in fact never be.

This causes me to doubt my framework, feel hopelessly "behind", and bite down harder to get more $$$$. Some other guy on the internet is within striking distance of 20x my target! If I don't sprint, I will never catch up!
