2 dead, 6 injured in shooting following party in downtown Los Angeles, police say
Two people were killed and six others injured in a mass shooting in an area of downtown Los Angeles where several parties took place overnight, authorities said.
The mass shooting happened around 1 a.m. Monday in the area of 14th Place and Paloma Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. There were reportedly multiple parties taking place in the area at that time.
LAPD officers were on patrol in area around 11 p.m. Sunday when they saw someone going into what they believe was an unauthorized party.
"It appeared to be a party. It is unknown what type of party that was. The officers did shut down that party and locked the location," said LAPD Captain Letisia Ruiz.
More than 50 people were said to be at that party, which officers then shut down and cleared out. One person was arrested for being in possession of a gun.
A few hours later, police returned to the scene for a shots fired call and found eight people struck by gunfire.
Details about what exactly happened were limited, but a man died at the scene and a 52-year-old woman was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Six others were injured in the shooting, at least one of them in critical condition. Police said some were transported to the hospital by ambulance and others self-transported. The wounded victims range in age from 26 to 62 years old.
A video captured parts of the scene overnight. People can be heard shouting and others are seen running.
Gregory Derisso identified as one of the victims killed
Judner Derisso says his son, 29-year-old Gregory Derisso, was one of the victims killed in the mass shooting.
Derisso said his son had three small children and was supposed to have dinner with him, but never showed up.
He said he got a call in the middle of the night from the mother of one of his son's friends. When he arrived at the scene, Derisso found out his son was one of the two people killed.
He described him as a good gentleman and father of two boys and one girl.
"Sometimes you cannot choose friends for them. You see they're dangerous, you tell them to stay away from the dangerous, he don't want to stay away from the dangerous," said Derisso.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass put out a statement on X saying in part, "This senseless violence and loss of life is devastating and those who are responsible must be held accountable."
"There will be no tolerance for violence in this city. My thoughts are with the victims and their families," she added.
Meanwhile, a motive for the shooting has not been determined.
It is unclear whether there is any connection between the first incident police reported and the shooting that followed.
No arrests have been made and a description of a suspect was not available.
