Green party councillor Cllr Sohail Asghar has been arrested on suspicion of modern slavery in Accrington.
Asghar, who was elected in May to represent Accrington West and Oswaldtwistle Central on Lancashire County Council, has voluntarily given up the Green Party whip at County Hall. He is now sitting as an Independent councillor, though he remains part of the Progressive Lancashire Group opposition.
Green Party figures confirmed the move but declined to give further details. Group leader Cllr Gina Dowding said Asghar had relinquished the whip while an investigation was under way, while Hyndburn Green Party vice-chair Joan West described the decision as being for “personal reasons”.
It is understood the decision follows Asghar’s arrest earlier this month, according to multiple sources. Lancashire Telegraph inquiries suggest the arrest was linked to a police investigation into alleged modern slavery offences in Accrington.
Police confirmed three people were arrested at a property in the town on November 6 as part of the investigation. A 29-year-old man, a 51-year-old woman, and a 55-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of offences including slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour, with one also suspected of making threats to kill. All three have since been released on bail.
Cllr Asghar, who is a self-employed private hire driver, moped repairman, and qualified football referee, has not responded to requests for comment. |
