All of my mid 30s siblings: childless and unmarried

4 of us in total, all of us childless and unmarried. Age ranges from 32 to 39. Only one is in a serious relationship, two have never really had a serious relationship.
I'm one of the single ones. My parents are still around, but I can tell it seriously bums them out to not have any grandkids. I think part of it is their fault, but part of it is due to external factors that really don't make kids an appealing choice.
I have several close friends with kids and mostly all of them say some variation of "don't do it" or "wait as long as you can" or "hold on to your freedom" etc. Not one of them has seemed very happy about being a parent.
This is what happens when the social expectation of rearing children goes away. There's really not a "point" to it anymore. There were several meaningful justifications to have kids for all of our history (religious regions, providing labor for the farm, you're a weirdo if you don't do it...the list goes on) but most of those are gone now.
Children seem like a huge personal risk and tremendous stressor that I just don't need. There are so many ways kids could make your life hell and you have to do a lot of things correctly for that not to be the case.
I guess my point is this: what would you say to someone like me, whose 3 siblings have no kids, whose parents desperately want grandkids, and who is seeking a compelling reason to have kids? Advice? |

Back then marriage was a "thing you do" and there weren't many barriers to it. It is almost impossible to have a normal relationship anymore. Just think of folks in their 50s-70s who are now single--they are completely unable to meet anyone of the opposite sex anymore.
My advice for you is to look in the mirror and ask yourself if you have accomplished all you could want on your own. If so, then you should look to meet a halfway decent woman. It took me until 39, but I have now won at life. |

I feel the exact opposite. Absolutely wish I had done it sooner. There is a certain class of "thing-doers" who feel that way. They like "adventures" and "sophisticated social calendars" and parenthood definitely puts the kibosh on a lot of that. |

I’ve known many, they are fully Americanized and don’t have strong family dynamics (and Japanese culture is generally understated and antisocial to begin with) and on top of that they’re Asian so it’s harder for them to date, particularly if male.
