it's an interesting trend. if you look at traffic and trade patterns, cities like chihuahua and monterrey are downplaying mexico city and are doing a form of soft integration into the US.

if you're in a place like Torreón (a big urban area/manufacturing hub about 300 miles from the border), the road/rail network makes it much easier for you to reach the US than guadalajara/mexico city to the south.

i suspect that mexico's CIA-aligned girl president is going to encourage this trend, too. the cartels will still be at war with each other, but they will stand aside when it comes to north/south commerce. that's partly why a lot of the most intense fighting in the cartel wars has shifted back south to michoacan/guanajuato and away from sinaloa and northern tamaulipas.

mexico's longer-term fate is to be quasi-dissolved into some kind of corporate/para-statal set of entities under 'US'/globohomo control. 'cartels' are actually a symptom of this, in that structures similar to family businesses are essentially grabbing chunks of the mexican economy for themselves, and the mexican government is too weak and corrupt and incompetent to stop them.

it's an ongoing process, but it was actually slowed for a while by the cartel wars directly along the border (juarez, matamoros, nuevo leon, etc.). however, this actually isolated northern mexico FROM the core in a manner which has aided the current trends.

the recent cartel arrests were the result of cartels themselves using the US legal apparatus to attack each other and settle disputes, which is also an implicit abandonment of mexico city and its demands.

isn't that crazy? but true

what do you think about the claims that Los Zetas in particular were a US intel asset used against harder-to-crack Sinaloa/Gulf/Juarez/Tijuana cartel enclaves + paramilitary forces against the PRI and leftists within Mexico in general? mainstream journalists have refused to touch this for somewhat obvious reasons despite it being a career-making scoop (and a very interesting story, to boot)

the training, the tactics, the prevalence of elite federal police and military personnel within them, their non-cartel targets (student political agitators, journalists, certain tourists, etc), and more made me wonder about this years ago, although i know some of that comes from the original personnel within the Zetas org and their backgrounds

Karlstack should cover this imo if he wants a real scoop

there are substantial US intelligence ties to several cartels, but they are also opportunists, and there are other international mafias involved with their businesses. the one thing that no one ever mentions are the israeli ties. like the israeli 'DJs' and 'tourists' in certain areas who are obviously doing quite a bit more than tourism.

the zetas in particular never seemed all that united. they were more like a series of related gangs with some 'commanders' who were probably CIA guys, and others who were trying to go their own way. many of them are now dead.

mexico desperately needs people to migrate out of mexico city. i'm not sure the desert is the best option, but that's where the jobs are. amlo is trying to get more stuff going in the east/southeast with the train maya and the isthmus corridor. the latter could really be a game changer especially if the panama canal runs dry.

Mexico doesn't need to do anything. It's the country that just happened. Someone called it New Spain, now they call it Mexico as though people feel some kinship with the ancient Mexica who only ever lived in Tenochtitlan and were only big for like 150 years

its got pockets that are very nice but overall it's a disaster and it keeps spreading out as far as the eye can see from an airplane. it's built on a drained lake bed on top of a major fault surrounded by mountains. also their water infrastructure leaks something like 75% of their water. most drinking water is trucked in.

so it's either going to sink, crumble to pieces, run out of water, or everyone's going to get sick from the smog. likely all of the above. and when the big one hits you're not getting out of condesa/roma/polanco without a helicopter.

yeah the infrastructure/urban planning ethos seems abysmal and about as haphazard as mogadishu's at this point

lot of cyberpunk future fright-porn images and videos (endless corn rows of tract houses, shoebox apartment buildings crumbling on each other, etc) coming out of mexico city these days

Northern Mexico is counterintuitively White than most of California because the Mexicans in northern Mexico tend to be like 80% European.

Cali averages out to like 40% European.
