Long-time BIGFED employee here. Not going to share too much, but I currently work at one of the more benign agencies. However, an opportunity with the DoD is available that would basically max out how much I could realistically make in BIGFED. The problem is that I don't want to support the war system, which is why I've avoided the DoD and IC.

Don't have the details on what I'd do at the DoD specifically yet. The money is alluring because BIGFED doesn't pay all that well but comes with job security.

The pay increase is large enough that it would have a relatively substantial effect on how much I can save/invest and thereby retire early, which is one of my primary goals in life.

I can only see myself working for the DoD if it's some benign role where I'm not supporting anything related to war/weapons/foreign policy/etc. but rather helping out active duty people and/or veterans outside of any insane foreign policy goals of the US (the key reason I've avoided the DoD and IC).

WWXOD?

Depends how much you find war distasteful. To me it’s nbd. If your moslem family got blown up in an air strike I’d probably avoid it.

The DOD is huge, the largest employer in the US. They do a lot more than what you hear about in the news because it's so huge, and a good chunk of it is probably far-removed from what you're concerned about. Figure out what exactly the job entails and decide from there. Most likely it's some pointless government job with no relevance. And don't military contractors do a lot of the dirty work anyway?

Breh you're not going to be involved in the shit you're worried about; that's all top secret (or Q clearance with the DOE). IIRC millions of people have secret clearances and it's NBD. Sounds like some lame-ass job where your employment there will have absolutely no impact on foreign policy/war/whatever you're concerned about. Up to you if you're fine with that. Personally I'd take that fed job security and just quit if it really keeps you up at night (which I doubt it would, given what you've shared).

You can tell him that but the DOD's mission is WAR and all aspects of it support that goal, whether you're front line infantry or a back office turdskin programming shit

That's what OP seems to believe, but the reality is working for the DOD is welfare for proles who dgaf about "war" and join the military hoping to see absolutely no combat and then getting benefits through the VA. Only the indoctrinated/insane people running things truly believe in that mission.

I worked for the DoD

Sometimes I'd go on base and they would act like I was special or important and I'd meet w generals who seemed important but I have no clue who they were

I spent my time at that job writing some kind of audit system. I was the sole programmer for like 9 months and it was one of my first jobs so I didn't know jack shit.

Cr OP could end up auditing how troops are fed or some shit. I'd say OP should take it if it's something as pointless as that. Get that fed job security and fade into irrelevance as you collect a secure salary.

Then again those troops are the ones doing the killing and whatnot, so any support of them is supporting war and OP sounds like a huge liberal pussy.

Everything dies

My job was pretty chill no one ever bothered me

They just cared that the work was done but there was legit zero pressure

I almost feel like my job was more of a spend it or lose it type thing. I remember hearing that and seeing that a lot.

The thing is, very few troops are doing any killing. No active wars at the moment; only insane, occasional airstrikes. Military service is mostly a shitjob for proles with few other options who aren't too interested in actually getting shot at or killing anyone.

I'll admit I'm a lib, but I just haven't even seriously thought about working for the DoD because I'm not supportive of nearly all wars. But this context here is helpful as I wouldn't be involved in any war efforts or strikes or other aggressive military activity as far as I can tell. So I guess I could myself working for the DoD if it's just "a job" and nothing related to war efforts.

OP would just be "following orders," as they said at the Nuremberg trials.

TBF though, for all we know, OP could be working on some cool shit at DARPA.

I wouldn't call it scrupulosity. Reservations about military work have been a very real thing ever since the Vietnam War, so it's not just Millennials. I've interviewed with four or five military contractors over the years, and all of them asked me early on if I was fine with doing work for the military.
