How did he obtain power? The same way Lenin and Stalin did. By traveling the world and living with other Marxists and writing in ISKRA. He was a popular orator.
All of the Bolsheviks (or in Trotsky's case, eventual Bolsheviks) were charismatic Socialists who moved around Europe hanging out with other Marxists building their platform slowly back home. Trotsky went to prison a bunch of times for his views in various countries.
But like Lenin his popularity kept rising within Russia as the peasants became more disillusioned with the Czar.
Another reason why Communism was a successful avenue for Jews is that it allowed them to shed their identity completely. And Trotsky was already not Jewish presenting. And all the Bolsheviks had fake names and identities. No one cared as long as you were committed to the End of History. The enemy of the Bolsheviks were the Kulaks who were wealthy traditional farmers and small business owners. The #1 thing that drove the Soviets crazy were people independent of the government who had entrenched history and tradition. If you were willing to shed your independence and embrace statism, and erase anything that made you unique and different and become a Marxist they would be happy with you (to a point because everyone was still a suspect). |

Communism is notable for being against racism and discrimination as long as you are a Commie. Many instances in history of Commies uniting across ethic lines while other political factions remain divided over ethnicity and religion. |

In Communism everyone is considered equal because you shed your identity and worship the state. They were trying to sell world peace and the end of history which meant everybody got a piece of the pie (the same piece the government gave everyone, which was nothing).
You can't have an ideology that claims to be the last idea humanity will ever need and be running around pointing fingers at ethnic groups.
To wit the Soviets were always in search of mythical bad guys to blame for failures. First it was the kulaks because they were independent and were rooted in tradition. Then it was the Trotskyites. Then it was Stalin or whomever your predecessor was. |
