I watched Juror No. 2 today, which is playing in theaters in limited release.
It’s possibly Clint Eastwood’s final film, which he directed and produced at the age of 93 (!).
The trailer is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhkkBFhW-MM
Without ruining any of the spoilers, only discussing what is in the trailer, the main character, played by Nicholas Hoult, hits with his car what he thinks is a deer that runs off into the forest in the middle of a rainy night. He is later called for jury duty and discovers that what he may have actually hit was a woman and killed her that night, and her abusive, gang member boyfriend is wrongfully on charge for her murder. There are circumstances that make it unlikely for others to believe his story, although it is true. What do you do if the price of your earthly salvation - especially when you have a wife and newborn child they rely on you - is the condemnation of another man to life imprisonment?
The direction is top notch, the story flows and there’s not a dull moment throughout. The beats feel real and the twists and turns, while not predictable, make sense within the confines of the story. This is a contemplative movie, a quiet, soulful movie about the sometimes complicated nature of right and wrong, and how what is the just outcome may not always be the honest outcome. This is a very, very strong film; there are many layers and perspectives involved, and the film is adroit enough to recognize them.
If this is Eastwood’s final film, it is a strong note to end on. Very impressive. Go see it if this pitch sounds interesting to you.
9/10
