maybe my collection of peribellum japanese ephemera, like a pre-WWII tour guide, a 1950s book about japanese culture that is laughably wrong written by an italian dood, and today i just bought a book from 1920 or so written by a Japanese professor who had spent some time teaching the language at Columbia, it's interesting to see back then how they thought foreign languages should be taught

Numismatics is certainly one of the most preftigious of the colleting/research-based hobbies.

Hard to pick the most preftigious physical hobbies, as there's way too much at the extremes.

Numismatics is pretty cool, but it's like stamp collecting. I think rare maps are much more enjoyable than some 2,000 year old bronze coin worth $70k

This is my next map: https://www.raremaps.com/gallery/detail/99094/first-map-of-the-great-lakes-la-louisiana-parte-sette-coronelli

Numismatics takes the win because coins have been around much longer than stamps or maps.

Maps are also more difficult to collect due to their size and need for more careful storage & preservation. It seems to me more akin to art or book collecting.

That said, you've piqued a bit of map interest in me. I picked up a couple from the low countries in the past year, one being this: https://www.oldworldauctions.com/catalog/lot/195/497

Nothing at your level, but they are quite interesting and neat to have.

Part of the fun is the careful storage & preservation. I get all of mine professionally framed; it winds up costing an extra $500 or so because I use extremely high-grade materials. Ultimately, the finished product is exquisite and literally a piece of art. For example: https://i.imgur.com/fWpjvc5.jpeg

I have a deep interest in cartography. Back then, maps were deeply political & weaponized. The Spanish were notorious for it; they basically wanted the Gulf of Mexico to appear impassable & blocked by Florida, Cuba/Haiti, and South America--all regions that they controlled. The Dutch maps of the same period were far more accurate depictions of the region.

REMINDER: maps of that period weren't colorized or decorated with cartouches or anything else. Those were added by monks later on. The sole exception being the Dutch/Flemish, who were known for their elaborate cartouches, but not the colorization. Specifically, Abraham Ortelius, Johannes Blaeu, and Gerardus Mercator.

There are scammers in all transaction-based hobbies and industries.

Have you perused the numismatic offerings from a legitimate auction house like Heritage or Stack's Bowers? How about the numismatic literature selections from Charles Davis or Kolbe & Fanning?

Classic lit is difficult for most because of the language barriers.

Even native English speakers have trouble with Chaucer, let alone at cracking Beowulf, despite both being in "English."

Hunting is pretty low-brow throughout middle America.

Maybe it's preftigious to go on elephant hunting expeditions in Africa, or taking the schooner out to hunt wales.

Isn't it preftigious in the UK at least? I thought the royal family does it

Hmm... I think you're right. I imagine they're more the exotic hunting expedition or private hunting grounds type, both of which are decidedly more preftigious than the US stereotype of a drunken redneck in a tree stand wearing camo clothing from Wal-Mart.

hunting is on both extremes of the prestige scale, men of destiny and rednecks enjoy it while nebbish strivers don't have a way in. a lot like smoking.

Used to be prestigious but now I think it's prole. Lots of Russian oligarchs, communist dictator failsons of prominent communists from Colombia, etc.

Not like the 60s and before when most of the grid was gentlemen racers trying their hand at motorsports. Ferdinand Habsburg is racing in WEC now but he's an outlier rather than the norm.

SCUBA is NOT prestigious. I've been diving for 22 years and know a thing or two.
