Completely flips the gameplay loop on its head (instead of trying to build a perfectly defended base you need to pack up and leave every 15-30 days)

Dwarf fortress got a Steam release and has nice tiles now

Rimworld is more functional that dwarf fortress, less 'ultimate' ambition

Tarn, the dwarf fortress guy, wants to build a genuine world simulation. He is always building systems and then tearing them down because his 'vision' keeps expanding, like Michelangelo.

The rimworld guy is not such a megalomaniac and so the game works much better in its more 'limited' scope

it certainly has similarities but it's a lot less... involved than dwarf fortress where you have to memorize a bunch of supply chains. there's no z-layers to care about. etc

generally speaking the big difference in philosophy is in rimworld you always know what each single one of your doods is doing and set their individual priorities, etc. in df you end up with hundreds of doods (where I've never exceeded 20 in rimworld, and that was already quite a lot) and the goal is to automate everything

Anomaly was neat but too gimmicky to run through more than once or twice

I didn't like the spaceship mod when I tried it, I think it works much better more integrated into the base game. Also helped that I haven't played in 3 years so I got biotech at the same time which has a bunch of fun stuff to play with

My ssd is busted atm due to computer AIDS but I'll post the link to my mod stack at some point. I have about 70-80, pretty much all functionality or features, I like the default art style

Biotech is awesome but missing a few things you can get with mods pretty easily. Royalty seemed cooler than it actually was; I barely ever found cause to use non direct damage psy-powers and the dwarf fortress Noble requirements stuff was just annoying (the clothing breaks too fast and they don't always auto-equip the same class of item). Ideology is a must have but mainly used for rp stuff. Anomaly was very cool the first couple of times but it makes event exploration a drag and has serious balance issues especially without mods, although an unmodded colony wealth coefficient will end up killing you via mech invasions or whatever anyway

I think the big space mod was Save our Ship 2 and that in combination with the expanded vehicle mods (i really liked the one with the armored fuel powered drop pods---dieselpunk type-shit) made for a pretty fun tech tree to go through. It was very glitchy and poorly balanced esp. re: material requirements so it makes sense if you didn't like it

Prison Architect is also pretty fun and Rimworld-esque

it looks rough until you actually play it and the blocky and stark art style "clicks" as your settlements become a whirling machine of interfacing geometric shapes and little cogs shuffling around

the general aesthetic impression it leaves you with is very "lsd"ish and visually busy in all the right ways. the battles, not so much, basically just a simplified total war feel, but the settlement construction and management is top notch stuff

I'll give it a go some time. looks like he's finally about to release 1.0 anyway

I play with a ton of RimWorld ui/ux mods but there's so much in the base game + dlcs now that I don't bother with looking up any gameplay mods
