Both libs and cons lately have romanticized this mythical factory worker who could buy a house in the 50s. Factory workers buy houses NOW and it’s really not a huge deal imo. Maybe not 2021-present but that situation will correct itself somewhat maybe. Liberal artists think anyone who works for a living makes like $7/hr for some reason.

Also 1950s tract housing was shitty. Discuss.

I wonder what it was for whites. Quick search and I found this graph. It starts tracking later but I wonder if a larger proportion back then was extreme black poverty and the white rate was pretty similar to today. Sort of like infant mortality rates skewing life expectancy gains.

Even if every black person were Poor this still implies a poverty rate of 16% for whites, 2x today. But since not every black person is poor it was more than 2x as bad for whites.

The sweet spot for the economy not being an oppressive high tax welfare state but also not being Ruinous for the disadvantaged was like 1965-1972 or something. Kind of like with Trumpbucks, everything seems chill and 180 for a few years but you pay for it later.

Rates that low and major cities still have 1930s type shantytowns. Suicide rates and depression up all over too. Odd case.

I believe it. Whatever the rate was in the 50s, it was way way up from the 30s and so forth. "Capitalism" is extremely unstable and... entropic irl, fucks all kinds of shit up. But we sugarcoat everything and tell ourselves that everyone had a Fake Job at a factory that paid the modern equivalent of $170,000k to a HS dropout. It's a fairy tale that libs/cons tell themselves for differing reasons. The median 1950s American was an alcoholic who got fired every 14 months with a Car that didn't start imho.

Also the 50s are always depicted as this serene suburban dream full of respectable middle class people, but the reality was there were more Scumbags just as there are now. They just all had crew cuts and couldn’t wear off the rack clothing from Kohls, but they still drank and beat the shit out of their wives and kids.

Excellent post. I wasn't alive back then iirc but I would wager that the body politik was Scumlosery by and large. The Clique System was still nascent. A lot of the anachronistic ideas that dumbs/boomers have trace to the 50s. Naive stuff like Hard Work, Building Character by working the worst job you can find, or the idea that Clique "stops" being relevant after HS.

Like Prep parents seem so much more "in the know." Scumlosery parents' ideas about the world calcified in like 1967. Stuff like, again, encouraging a kid to eschew GPA and get the Worst Job Possible where they'd be around Scumbags. Or not even realizing the consequences of something like letting a kid ride the bus, where they'd be exposed to some Scumbag yelling MOTHERFUCKING NIGGER randomly from age 6 onward. The kids who live the furthest out - the Scummiest kids - are the first ones to board the bus in the morning, and the last to get off in the afternoon. Period.

Yeah but how accurate was that book? It was written by a Woman. Greasers and Preps, probably the only two types of guys who were "visible" to a girl in HS in the 50s. Probably tons of Losers but they don't get a book written about them except when the author is himself a Loser. The modal 1950s bro was a Scumloser. Working his ass off, doing manual labor, with no muscle tone whatsoever to show for it (although meaty af Hands).

Now do the 90s where The Simpsons and the Bundies were seen as poor scumbags even though they were married with kids, in pleasant houses, 2 cars, vacations every year, went to church, and a good school district.

And that change was pre-Biden. Just in the past couple of years housing payments have tripled.

Basically even a household of 2 professoinals right now can't buy the average home - you need about $140,000 in household income and that's assuming only minor expenses and no debt.

I think even for the 90s Bundy’s house was fantastical on a shoe salesman’s wage. His stupid wife didn’t even work iirc. Ed O’Neil was actually a poor from Rust Belt Ohio though.

TV obviously sugarcoats a lot of things, I mean people should be looking at irl and not some bullshit from TV. They make him a shoe salesman to make him ignominious but if they put him in a Trailer or in one of those shitty houses where the foundation is Wooden Pallets, people just won't see him as a lovable Loser and would just expect him to be on drugs or having sex with his daughter. Iirc Al was a Jock in HS which wins a semblance of the audience's respect, and was enough to carry the show in some ways.

“Poverty Rate” is a flawed measure and has been largely replaced amongst statisticians, economists, and public policy wonks as a measure of actual poverty by the “Supplemental Poverty Measure” (SPM).

In large countries wide wide variances in cost of living, the Poverty Rate overestimates financial and consumption stress in rural areas and underestimates it in urban areas. For example, California has one of the lower levels of poverty by the Official Poverty Measure (OPM), but has one of the highest by the SPM. The reason is because Californias high incomes make large portions of the population fall above the cutoff for poverty. But when their finances are looked at in detail, they are spending inordinate percentages of their income on food and housing and are extremely financially insecure.

who gives a shit what the poverty rate was in the 50's.

It's too fucking high now -- poverty and squalor and economic hopelessness shouldn't exist in the developed world.

The prole floor shouldn't be housing, healthcare, employment, wage, and food insecurity. These things should be secure and easily accessible to the prole.

We need a higher prole floor and actual poverty can and should be eliminated in the US. The fact that is not is fraudlies perpetuated by those with class security, which the American middle class no longer has.
