Both libs and cons lately have romanticized this mythical factory worker who could buy a house in the 50s. Factory workers buy houses NOW and it’s really not a huge deal imo. Maybe not 2021-present but that situation will correct itself somewhat maybe. Liberal artists think anyone who works for a living makes like $7/hr for some reason.
Also 1950s tract housing was shitty. Discuss.

I wonder what it was for whites. Quick search and I found this graph. It starts tracking later but I wonder if a larger proportion back then was extreme black poverty and the white rate was pretty similar to today. Sort of like infant mortality rates skewing life expectancy gains.

Now do the 90s where The Simpsons and the Bundies were seen as poor scumbags even though they were married with kids, in pleasant houses, 2 cars, vacations every year, went to church, and a good school district.
And that change was pre-Biden. Just in the past couple of years housing payments have tripled.
Basically even a household of 2 professoinals right now can't buy the average home - you need about $140,000 in household income and that's assuming only minor expenses and no debt.

“Poverty Rate” is a flawed measure and has been largely replaced amongst statisticians, economists, and public policy wonks as a measure of actual poverty by the “Supplemental Poverty Measure” (SPM).
In large countries wide wide variances in cost of living, the Poverty Rate overestimates financial and consumption stress in rural areas and underestimates it in urban areas. For example, California has one of the lower levels of poverty by the Official Poverty Measure (OPM), but has one of the highest by the SPM. The reason is because Californias high incomes make large portions of the population fall above the cutoff for poverty. But when their finances are looked at in detail, they are spending inordinate percentages of their income on food and housing and are extremely financially insecure.

who gives a shit what the poverty rate was in the 50's.
It's too fucking high now -- poverty and squalor and economic hopelessness shouldn't exist in the developed world.
The prole floor shouldn't be housing, healthcare, employment, wage, and food insecurity. These things should be secure and easily accessible to the prole.
We need a higher prole floor and actual poverty can and should be eliminated in the US. The fact that is not is fraudlies perpetuated by those with class security, which the American middle class no longer has.
