I don't think he's being read much anymore and I don't think he makes it into the 2030s or 2040s

i think cormac mccarthy will make it. not a stylistic or generational contemporary, but wrote during same decades

DFW needed a well-received "crying of lot 49" - something with a digestible length so that people could claim to be in on DFW without devoting a whole month to reading infinite jest/gravity's rainbow etc

I think he's overrated too

I recently read the same-titled "The Boys" comic and while it was better than I was expecting it had the same overly acerbic/bitter/borderline nihilistic, optimism not allowed, Edge is Lord type attitude that I associate with both McCarthy and Gen X era media

to me, there's a tremendous optimism in mccarthy.

its hard-earned optimism, tbh, coming up out of the guts and blood, but its optimism

Popularity of this or that instance of style/era/period in liberal arts is cyclical. We're probably going to see another Hemingway/Grey/Lost Generation hype period again before long, albeit in a much smaller circle than it would've been in ~2009 due to widespread illiteracy/functional non-engagement with the arts

I agree with this

his oeuvre is really just IJ (amost 3x as long as Moby Dick) and a series of very clever but throw-away articles for the Harpers/Atlantic set. There's little in between and really not even a second complete novel after IJ. those articles are perfect for a Norton's anthology but not conducive to "serious" study - which is my understanding of OP's point

also we're headed for a post-literate society and while that's really a separate point it does mean that fewer and fewer writers are going to make it, long term

does anyone? everything is either sci-fi/fantasy/romance (same thing, basically) or "personal memoirs" - lightly fictionalized or not - about the specific navelgazing experience of growing up [demographic] in [location]

Novels are shit. People naturally remember song lyrics and rhymes, but they have to be taught to read and write. If you had to put something in writing it's because you didn't have the talent to make something people would remember.

Novels are pretty dead. Total niche genre of entertainment nowadays, basically doesn’t even exist for normal dudes, mostly all geared toward fags and women
