I learned this very late in life and have spent a lot of time on worthless endeavors like reading books on philosophy of mind or language. Years later you realize not only do you not have any answers, you wasted your precious time on wankery that no one cares about even if you could remember all of it (you can't). I realize this is anti-intellectual in the extreme but unless you are a college professor there is no value to knowing any of this stuff. go to the gym or play golf instead.

I like listening to intellectual stuff on audiobooks as entertainment, not because you actually learn anything (you don't), but at least it's something new to hear.

Yeah you read these books and then have no one to talk to about them

The Bible has the best ROI on this simply because it's the most widely read by a long shit

There’s some truth to this but it’s largely a function of being able to share your intellectual pursuits with others (this is generally very difficult because there are very few smart people and even fewer who are interested in your specific thing and who you’d otherwise like and get along with)

Compare to playing basketball or something. Anyone can play basketball. You can go to the gym and get a game anytime. Maybe some of the guys who play are cool enough to hang out with and have a good time with. You become friends. Etc

For anyone who is actually smart, you’re never really satisfied until you can share your intellectual pursuits with others. Life is otherwise quite lonely for the intelligent

they're two poems written in an artificial language drawn from different regions and filled with frozen archaisms. it depicts fantasy worlds where men lift boulders over their heads, horses talk, gods and goddesses guide spears, and individual men can slaughter scores of rivals. even leaving all that aside, its audience was so far removed from the heroic age that the days of achilles and ajax and aeneas and hector might as well have been an otherworld, like arthurian legend, with all its impossibly noble and strong lords and nights as well as its enchanted forests and fairy folk, from the prospective of the sir gawain poet's audience. you can draw a great portrait of a heroic society from homer if you really try, but it's not a clear and consistent picture, and there is not a consistent homeric ethos. what the fuck are you talking about when you appeal to its rootedness in reality?

you just have to look slightly below the bronze age mythopoesis to find wriggling underneath vital questions of manhood, anger, friendship, courage, family, and meaning. that's a far cry from the mental masturbation of philosophy of language or whatever. and you're very wrong that the characters are portrayed as irreproachable. they're very human. recall, for example, the scene where mighty achilles openly weeps in front of thetis for the disrespectful treatment he received from agamenon.

you're probably getting those ideas about homer ultimately from nietzsche through some intermediaries. if that's what you find interesting or important, just read nietzsche instead and enjoy homer *for* its mythopoesis. the iliad and the odyssey are beautiful poems and shouldn't just be mined for ethical ideas you could get elsewhere.

no i avoided all secondary literature, and even homer in translation, before reading it in the original, so that i could experience homer without someone else's filters.

why did you choose to read homer in the first place? even without reading secondary scholarship, you had ideas about homer from somewhere. and frankly, you aren't experiencing homer without filters. you don't read greek natively. you probably read a reconstruction put together by germans with varying assumptions and goals. this is in service of reading a poem in an artificial language no one could have possibly spoken. how would you even know if you're getting an 'unfiltered' experience? was any classical age greek?

i could talk a lot about textual criticism, but i did not. my points were partially philosophical and partially high-level linguistic, not about dittography or proposed emendations in scholia or what have you. the most important point is on your presumption that you can approach homer tabula rasa. i hold that you simply can't.

why is that desirable for the amount of time it requires to learn greek even passably well? unless there's something magical about reading homer in the original, you would be much better off just reading it in translation (or, again, just reading nietzsche directly). i have wasted plenty of years getting good at greek and, to the OP's point, the benefits are highly overrated outside of purely aesthetic enjoyment, which you claim not to care about. there is nothing magical about reading things 'in the original' just to have read them 'in the original'.

also: i'm not a lib you dumb fag.

somewhat true but even a topic like cognitive neurology (interesting as hell and rooted squarely in reality) is of little value. I know because I've read just about every serious book on the topic since McGilchrist's Master and His Emissary.
