IQ? Did you get into any hijinx? Were you doing calculus in 4th grade? Did your parents know you were 140+ IQ? Give us some stories.

The only nerdy hijinx I can remember is making a hydrogen sulfide generator in chemistry lab and lowering it down the heating system return air duct on a rope. They evacuated the building but I never got caught, even when I went back later to pull it up. My accomplice was my friend the plastic surgeon who is now out on bail awaiting trial for the attempted murder of his wife.

I used to disable the speedometer on my dad's car so I could drive it all over without the mileage showing up. Minor hack.

When TV wrestling got big about 1957 a bunch of us would go to my friend's house whose parents were both gone from noon until 8 p.m. every day. We'd move the living room furniture out of the way and pretend we were wrestlers. We'd beat the shit out of each other. One day we broke one of his mother's tables. I ran to the corner grocery, picked up a good glue, and put it back together. I guess I did a good job, because it was 30 years later when the table finally fell apart and his mother noticed it had been glued. I finally confessed and we all had a laugh.

My musical prodigy friend's parents were alcoholics. They also had a commercial freezer full of ice cream in giant containers and massive supplies of bourbon. He and I and a couple of other kids used to go to his house after school and make bourbon milkshakes.

I guess there were a few other things but they are even more boring. Mostly I was law abiding.

The only high IQ story I can remember is that in 5th grade we all got our first IQ tests. After the group test I got called to the office one day out of the blue, which scared the shit out of me. It turned out a nice psychologist was there to give me a Stanford-Binet because I had maxed the group test. I knew what it was but never told him I knew.,

A while later I started being taken to the high school from time to time to take classes. Once they had me give a lecture on the solar system to high school students. That was a horrible thing to do to a kid and it took a long time to recover. After a few months of this abuse I asked the principal to please stop because it was fucking up my life, so they just let me do my own thing from then on.

Senior year of high school I bumped into the Stanford-Benet psych again. There was a national science camp being held in West Virginia and each state got to send two students. In my state they made the selection by picking from the top 25 scoring students in the state on the Ohio Psychological Exam, which they gave to all seniors. It was an IQ-like test that is obsolete now. When I went to the state capitol to be interviewed, one of the interviewers was the guy who gave me the Stanford-Binet. I remember they asked me about the Vietnam War, which I politely said I thought sucked ass. That sank me to second alternate, but I was having a lot of sex with my girlfriend so I was happy to stay home. I'm sure the WVA thing was a gookfest supreme.

I went off to college a couple of summers while in high school. Most people didn't know where I was, so it wasn't too reputationally damaging. The first summer I was 15 and took an advanced biology course at a nearby state U. I also discovered I really liked sex that summer. Great memories. Tall Dutch ancestry. 180 time. The next summer was at a well known private university. Wasn't so much fun, but I learned some new stuff. That summer was my first encounter with arrogant east coast ethnic types. Preview of things to come.

I know I was a nerd and had a lot of arcane interests, but I tried to keep it to myself as much as possible. I mean, what normal kid sits home becoming enthralled by special relativity and doing time dilation calculations?

In 7th grade I bought a slide rule for $1.80 from Lafayette Radio after reading a Heinlein book in which the young protagonist made derogatory remarks about people who couldn't use slipsticks.

Got a general class ham radio license in 8th grade and built a lot of electronic stuff, some of which worked. I used to entertain my friends by setting up electric shock things. Once got my friend Tommy (now deceased) to lick a 90 volt B battery. Note: he lived many years after the battery episode.

I was friends with a lot of jocks. I was not a great athlete, but I wasn't so bad as to be embarrassing, and was pretty strong and actually looked more athletic than I was. I just wanted to get laid and be a regular guy. I did well on the first - a solid A, and I'd give myself a B in the latter.

Overall, however, I have generally felt like a dumb ass. You know the Dylan line? "There's something going on, but you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones?" I'm Mr. Jones.

This got far too long. Sorry. More than you want to know.

"He and I and a couple of other kids used to go to his house after school and make bourbon milkshakes. "

why is it you think boomers were the first to really start the trend of "you have to monitor what your children are doing at all times" that eventually led us to a point where society harshly judges parents for NOT helicoptering? I think most all generational talk is more or less nonsense, but in many ways yours really was the last generation where kids and teenagers got up to this sort of shit across the country (maybe the first half of GenX as well), and for some reason you guys went on a crusade to prevent your own children from exhibiting any sort of deviancy.

We didn’t supervise our kids very closely. Should have done more, esp in HS. Did not grasp the weed issue. I think helicopter parents came in a little later. Also, I grew up in a small town. There were limits on how much trouble you could get into. No drugs except alcohol. Little crime. Almost everybody knew who you were.

My mother went to 8th grade and my dad to 4th. My sister dropped out of HS sophomore year to get married. My dad was disappointed he didn’t get a good ol’ boy and my mother wanted another girl. My dad opposed college and my mother thought directional state u was plenty good. I just wanted to get far away. I have always felt like a misfit and imposter. Still do. MIT was the first place I felt like I sort of fit in. Was not prepared for the rigor, but figured it out, more or less.

Story about the IQ test reminds me of how I was "selected" or whatever to take the SATs when I was 12 because I scored so well on whatever-the-fuck standardized test I was taking at 11-12.

Terrible idea because it basically told me I was smart as fuck and removed the little motivation I had to try whatsoever at school. I still got good grades, good SAT, etc in high school and went to a top UG. But I never took school seriously at all and so never did any planning with what I was in school for -- hence me doing some useless Humanities degree and ending up in law school.

That said, I probably would have been lazy no matter what. But I stick by my belief that it's a terrible idea to tell smart kids that they're smart.
