There is no sonic difference between Les Halles and les Alles assuming that you ignore the liaison in the latter. The H does not confer any meaning in terms of whether you pronounce the H and French dictionaries use an asterisk to differentiate between *hibou and hiver. Hence it has no orthographic function and is merely a vestige of Latin and Etruscan orthography that serves no purpose.
2. Gascon/Occitan is not French, it's not mutually intelligible. It's basically Portuguese. |
