New details released in Jones water buffalo attack
JONES, Okla. (KFOR) – Some new details were released Monday morning after a man, later identified as Bradley McMichael, was killed by two water buffalo in Jones on Friday. Town police said both animals had to be put down due to their aggressive behavior toward people on scene.
“We take those animals for granted because they’re docile and they are kind and gentle for the most part, but you need to be worried because every moment you’re in that field, you are in danger because the animal could decide otherwise and there’s not much you can do,” McMichael’s friend Matthew Clary said.
It was a dark scene Friday night that was haunted by that very reality. Jones police said it was about 8:30 p.m. when they got the call that McMichael was attacked by two water buffalo.
“This wasn’t his first experience handling livestock,” McMichael’s girlfriend Jennifer Green said. “He knew what precautions to take, but livestock are unpredictable and things happen.”
The newly released information from Jones Police showed that they originally couldn’t get to McMichael due to one of the water buffalo being too aggressive. So, they had to put one of them down. Once they got in, they found McMichael with “multiple deep lacerations that proved to be fatal.”
“It’s part of the risk of being involved with something like that,” Green said.
While on scene, police said the second water buffalo became agitated and threatening to people there, so they had to put it down as well. An investigation found that McMichael bought the water buffalo at an auction a day earlier. Before his death, he got trapped in their enclosure while tending to them.
His family remember him as a man they called larger than life and added that he died doing what he loved, which was looking after livestock.
“Everybody knew him. He grew up here. His family been here for a long time. He loved farming. He loved his livestock,” Green said.
