Wagner occasionally pitched in the minors but he was a SS. he's 10th all time in WAR for MLB players.

Cy Young is a good guess but wrong. the two HoF pitchers who set the record did it in 1901 and 1913.

i should have specified 9-inning.

but believe it or not you could yield 54 hits in a nine inning game and still have a CGSO.

You could get at least 45 (9x5).

Every inning could be:

single

pick off runner

single

pick off runner

single

single

single

strikeout

Maybe the last hitter, instead of striking out, reaches 1st, and is credited with a hit, but he (or any of the runners) is then tagged out before the runner on 3rd crosses the plate. That would give 6 hits an inning.

I think if the bases are loaded by singles and then every out is a force out at home that would result in a 6-hit inning and 6*9 =54

the third out in all 9 innings is a runner hit by a batted ball. that's an out for the runner but the batter gets credit for a hit.

this was a fun thread for me and i hoap for you too.

I think my example works too. Last batter gets to first and gets the hit, but tries to keep going like a retard and is tagged out before the super slow guy on 3rd gets home.
