Most selection was done in settings where people spent all day everyday outside doing manual labor, nothing we use existed, everyone had about the same position except that some people were a little bigger/stronger or slightly less poor, and the average person knew approximately nothing about anything. It's not in any way surprising that human psych is not well-tailored to fucking around on computers inside all day, driving cars, and being aware of global events and people who are 1000000x more successful.
Also even in ancient times probably some people got depressed and died from starvation/neglect/fucking up relations with their tribe and being abandoned, but this was not noteworthy because people died all the time for reasons that no one understood. Some of these people had kids before they died since depression can be cyclic or triggered by events.
It is all bullshit though - 90%+ of "mental illness" goes away if you stop doing drugs, go outside, get some exercise, talk to a friend, get some work done, etc. The other 10% is shitty defective people who probably need to die. |
