Right here the guy pops off the timing chain cover and you can see what a horrendous mess VW created. There are no less than four chains there:

https://youtu.be/r2DWShxuPcU?t=156

Here's where he explains the problem in his own words:

Yes, but that's a very easy problem to avoid. It's more a benefit for women who don't know how to maintain a car. Belts are only catastrophic if the water pump starts dumping water on it and for some reason you don't notice.

Quieter and I can service it myself. I don't mind chains on a Toyota since I know they are designed right, but notice that they put a belt on that Lexus V8. That's engine is so quiet and vibration free its certified for use in airplanes. How many V-engines are that smooth?

Honda also uses belts and they are the biggest engine maker on earth.

My neighbor bought one once for $20k after asking me for advice, which was the exact opposite of "buy a complicated V10." Within 6 months, I found a MASSIVE oil puddle under his engine, so I told him as much and he took it in for service. I told him to get rid of i; the Toyota Dealership doing the repairs under warranty didn't have the expertise. He didn't listen. It broke down again after less than. A month

If you think this is bad -- to escape their bad head gasket problems Subaru decided to abandon gaskets in favour of caulk. The engine on the Crosstrek is literally caulked together. At the 10-12 year mark the caulk dries out and cracks and the engine dies.

At this point -- just get a Toyota. Everything else is shit.

Yeah I think you have to wonder about carmakers even making engines that size. Honda has a strict "no V8s, not ever" rule. For them it was shameful to even have to put a V6 in the NSX. They would have done it with a four if they could. I don't know who buy's their V6s anymore. The Odysee and Ridgline and a few Acuras?

I see Audi the same way. It's either a 4cyl or a monstrosity.

For any other engine layout, BMW makes no sense. Mercedes are the only Germans I expect to make really good V8s.

Has Volvo ever produced a dud? I remember the 850 well. Back in that era it seemed like every time they took a gamble the results were good. I feel like that's always a safe compromise if you feel like you need to own a European car for signaling purposes.

EDIT: I think the S60 was a flop at one time and used ones were going for super cheap

I've owned MB, BMW and Audi. Much prefer Audi for the driving experience and reliability. Now have an A8 L 4.0. 2002 A6 2.7T had a timing belt. Replacing it required removing the front of the car. I prefer chains. Belts seem to be fading in popularity.

MB dramatically improved its driving experience in early 2010s with 4matic and trickle down externalities from bringing AMG in house

I assume 4cyl Audis are fine. If I wanted a German 4cyl I would consider them. For 6cyl I wouldn't trust anyone but BMW or Porsche. For 8cyl I would look at Mercedes. It's not that I think Audi is shitty, just that I have no reason to think are good at making big powerful engines. Their AWD system is great and it's what I think keeps them in the running, but you don't need a yuge engine to have good AWD.

When did I ever say BMW is great? They make some good straight sixes and their motorcycle engines are cool. Honda and BMW are the only motorcycles I would consider owning, and I'd probably go with BMW. Their stick shifts feel nice to drive too. I like Honda sticks better in general, but the M5 is probably nicest stick shift I've ever driven. As for Audi, I think they have the best AWD system, with Subaru a close second. I don't expect them to stand out in any other way, and as far as I can tell they never have.

I also think Mercedes makes some quality shit. I especially like their diesels, which you cannot get in the USA any longer unless you're getting a Dodge Sprinter. Even used, there are issues with the Bluetechs. If I had to pick one car to drive for the rest of my life it could be a 300D and run biodiesel as needed. You can also run biodiesel in pre-1986 diesel Land Cruisers with some mods.

Engine design was largely perfected decades ago. The 3800 V6, the volvo redblock, etc. We haven't made any huge leaps recently. Furthermore straight sixes is to be a lot more common. Old Dodge pickup trucks had them. It's only recently that they've all but vanished. I don't think anyone makes one except BMW anymore.

PS look at who owns V8s in the 20th century. No Germans. Look at #1. Design is old as fuck.

OP here. Recently met a Hispanic dood on DACA who specializes in these engines. He says he's the only guy who will work on them, so he's always got customers
