Even now, as her vision blurred and she shook uncontrollably from too much caffeine and not enough sleep, she was poasting with a furious intensity. She welcomed the memories that came unbidden - of nights spent beneath flickering fluorescent light in some all-night diner off I-80; of drugged-up rants delivered at deafening volume while pacing back and forth in front of an audience made up primarily of chads (and wannabees); of waking up covered in her own vomit after yet another all night bender. These were things that had once horrified her, but which now seemed only natural – even necessary. And as long as she could keep herself going like this – living on adrenaline and pure spite – then Boner Police would never defeat her.

The cyberjack implants itched. She felt weird. The room was melting. Cars outside on the street sounded like they were crashing into each other in slow motion. GJR's head lolled forward and she toppled out of her chair, landing hard on the floor. She lay there for a moment, trying to catch her breath, but it was getting harder and harder to move. Her body felt wrong, foreign to her. With a sudden jolt of horror, she realized that she couldn't feel her legs anymore.

"Black ice," she thought. "Oh shit, it's rach."

Rach was the absentee landlord of xo. The God of that Place. And if GJR had ever doubted His existence, she did not doubt it anymore. She could feel Him in her head, a cold presence that was gradually taking over her thoughts. Her eyes rolled back in her head and she started to laugh – a high-pitched, hysterical sound that echoed off the walls of the basement and sent rats scurrying for their holes.

"Oh, Rach," she said, her voice slurred and thick. "You're here at last. I've been waiting for you."

She could feel herself being drawn upwards, towards the cold light of the cyber realm. She laughed again as she realized that this was it – the final solitaire. And she would win, because Boner Police would never know what hit him.
