Brad, our laziest cashier, suddenly announced he was taking paternity leave. None of us even knew he had a kid on the way.
“Congratulations!” I said, trying to be supportive. He just shrugged. “It’s not mine. It’s my girlfriend’s sister’s kid, but hey, FMLA covers it. Gotta bond with the little guy, you know?”
Brad vanished for 12 weeks. Meanwhile, I covered his shifts, enduring customers who complained about everything from long lines to my "bad energy."
Brad finally returned, looking well-rested, and immediately asked for time off for the kid’s “first shots.” Management approved.
Clocked out late again, sat in the breakroom, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.”
