but so many variables: the floor type, cars, garbage cans, clothes, people standing around. there is this strange habit of crowds when guys are standing up and in a WAY more dangerous scenario to not interfere and "let them fight a fair one" but when it gets to the ground to interfere when in reality a lot of the life changing danger is already gone. when you get to the ground you need to be ready to end it quick and do so in a way that 1) minimizes injury, 2) ensures the fight is actually over and 3) leaves you in a position where you stand in base quickly and safely. i know its against the general sentiment, but RNCs are not great on the ground imho. arm triangles from knee on belly or S-mount collar chokes accomplish all of the goals i mentioned.

bjj has a large gap in takedowns. a lot of that is because the sport of jiujitsu doesn't punish pulling guard or dropping directly into butterfly guards which is currently en vogue due to leglocks.

honestly, and this is something people will disagree with a ton, the best ruleset for grapplers to maintain a self defense system is the catch wrestling rule set. it severely punishes letting your back get exposed to the floor. and most grapplers don't really know how it feels when a wrestler REALLY fucking sprawls especially on something like concrete where you could pretty easily kill a guy if you wanted.

i would say most college wrestlers are already purple belts once they learn the rules. that's just reality. i was a long haul blue belt for various reasons, but no one pretended i wasn't an expert grappler. i went to submission grappling tournaments nogi and always went into the expert divisions because it would be ludicrous otherwise. belts just keep your gi closed. you either know what to do or you don't. iirc, rigan machado just gave josh barnett a black belt because, meh, of course he's a fucking black belt in bjj, retards.
