that comic strip debuted in the middle of 1978, at a time when marriage and family formation was still the default course for young men. but the character of Jon - a hapless bachelor living alone with his cat and his dog - managed to pick up on a sub rosa trend that was little-discussed but becoming more and more common in america.
garfield didn't feature wives or children or any kind of social progression at all in its plotlines. the early garfield strips seem oddly modern, in the way they present american social dynamics and atomization.
