Clearly a better songwriter in every way, and just as good at guitar. Cobain was the better singer but meh, it seems to be his legacy rests on basically

1) looks

2) suicide

also the whole image corgan cultivated for himself after siamese dream didn't do him any favors. ppl basically remember him as the whiny bald emo dude with the zero t shirt singing about vampires.

but ya he was infinitely more talented than Cobain, without a doubt.

his songs generally weren't as punchy or immediately affecting. "But Nirvana never wrote something like Mayonnaise or Soma!" you shriek, balls swinging so hard they scare your cat. and while true, that's hardly even the point, because Corgan never did an Aneurysm.

"his songs generally weren't as punchy or immediately affecting."

Sure but they were better overall, indisputably.

Cobain songs: harder-hitting

Billy Corgan songs: better melodies, better arrangement, better instrumentation, more original, better lyrics, etc

Man this is a hilarious millennial wrong turn. It helps if you were actually alive and old enough to get what was happening in music in 1991. The whole point of grunge was to make rock ugly again. The Eddy Van Halen/GnR legacy of the late 80s were too formulaic and technical, and it obviously counts greatly that Nirvana put out one single and video and wiped that shit right off the radio and MTV. Billy Corgan could've never done anything remotely like this because he's too much of a nancy boy studio junkie. He wouldn't have been able to make a record with that much balls, and even if he had no one would've taken him seriously because he sang like he was constantly dreaming of chopping his dick off and becoming a woman not that there's anything wrong with that.

bro the idea that the music video premier of smells like teens spirit was some singular event that WIPED HAIR METAL OFF THE MAP is pure unadulterated gen x flame by people who wanted to believe that their favorite band was changing the world. that shit was already on the way out by 1991 and Nirvana wasn't the catalyst.

I like Nirvana dude but you don't have to resort to this historical hyperbole bullshit when evaluating them.

btw billy corgan is a chill cubs fan who was fucking jessica simpson xoxohth.

Billy Corgan was like the guy in Oasis.

"Look! I wrote 6,000 songs for our new album! It's a double-album, with an accompanying double-album of outtakes and b-sides! Me write many, many songs. Ergo, I am a brilliant songwriter."

truth be told, all but like 2 or 3 of their songs were unlistenable/mediocre. his songwriting was compulsive/autistic.

the smashing pumpkins have put out 1 double album and 7 single albums get out you're done here

they've fallen off lately but that's true of basically every rock band in history.

Cobain made Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists while Billy Corgan missed the cut. Guitarists seem to appreciate Cobain's voicings more than they do Corgan's, although I believe that Corgan was better at composing (if not playing) and that by a wide margin.
