the church was in chatham NJ - this is a video of mouthpiece's set. my friend wound up in the photo that was the cover of mouthpiece's last 7". i was kind of in the background in that photo but you can barely see me. i was in the back bc i'd just had my nose broken and it was still in really bad shape.

when we were driving back to maryland that night, i nodded off at the wheel and nearly killed us.

hardcore music is for dweebs who want to latch onto something that they think is tough and aggressive. hardcore shows are inevitably a bunch of 17 year old jackasses searching for a scene and then about 20% tubby guys in their late 30s who think they've totally still got it because they have some bad brains tapes in their basement.

Hc started in 1979ish with bands like bad brains, DOA, black flag, etc. all the early D.C., LA and Boston stuff is hardcore

Keith Morris sang for black flag so that's all you need to know about the circle jerks

I don't know that your Keith Morris point is really that relevant. He was an early member and left well before they released their first album. Their very early stuff with him as a singer like "wasted" and "nervous breakdown" doesn't really resemble tracks on damaged like "rise above" which people point to when they talk about Black Flag's influence on Hardcore music. It's Ginn's guitar work and rollins aggression that are the elements that made black flag uniquely hardcore IMO.

Circle Jerks were faster, less serious, less aggressive. Didn't have the chanting or heavy elements you see in bands that identify as hardcore. Sure they can accurately be described as hardcore punk but to the extent hardcore is a genre they are clearly more punk than hardcore. In the same way few people who grew up listening to punk and hardcore would describe DK, descendents and bad religion as hardcore bands. They are punk even hardcore punk but I wouldn't describe any of them as just hardcore.

Kind of rambling and sorry if I'm splitting hairs.

I was never that into hardcore as much its various sub genres/offshoots (grindcore, pv, screamo, etc). Here's what stuck with me from the undeniably hardcore sound.

Black Flag - My War

Minor Threat - s/t

Refused - Shape of Punk

Paint It Black - New Lexicon

Probably Bane to round out the top 5, lol

It's a real throwback to 90s OC stuff (think Chain of Strength). Paramount is a modern classic, but the next album (Failed Entertainment) went in a different direction that killed the hype a bit.

Follow along with Triple B's releases and listen to the Axe to Grind podcast (like sports talk radio, but for hardcore) if you want to get a sense of modern hardcore. Magnitude, Regulate, One Step Closer and Ecostrike (aka EcoSTRIFE) are worth checking out as well.

Big modern hardcore trend I'm not entirely sold on is how nu metal it is. Tons of kids at shows wearing Korn and Slipknot shirts unironically. Vein.fm, Code Orange, Turnstile, and the latter Harm's Way stuff come to mind.

I blame Napster mostly, but our generation did a piss poor job handing down the scene to the next generation and they all got confused by the trash that was on the radio at the time. That period more than anything I was still going to shows and can remember the feeling that it was slowly slipping away in real time and not knowing what could be done to stop it.

00s hardcore really fucked it up. You either had the sensitive warrior poet American Nightmare shit, or the bad "edgy" youth crew revival stuff.

The 2010s were a solid decade where hardcore came back, but with some questionable bells and whistles pulled from nu metal, thrash, and even hip-hop (check out Pillars of Ivory tho, shit rules).

We all made jokes about "punks" who were at Hot Topic right before the show in the 90s but after the internet that was a real thing that represented a major faction within the scene that bands had to not alienate. It sucked.

on the one hand, it sucks to be in my 40s, but on the other, i was in the hc scene probably for the last generation that it was really good (1992-00 or so). i've noticed myself the stuff you guys point out above - particularly that the internet seems to have just made everything easier to access and thus watered down everything. when i was 14-15, you had to mailorder records and shirts from revelation records (which literally took months to receive) or find a distro like Very (guy who ran that was so cool, RIP). so if you knew about this music it was something special.

the funny thing is, i thought my generation of hc was terrible because (1) we missed seeing gb, judge, etc by just a few (or in some cases a couple) years and (2) hardcore's sound became very divergent and you had a lot of metal, super melodic bands rather than stuff that you could readily link to minor threat and bad brains. in retrospect, that was a cool thing about the scene then, and i wound up seeing some really great shows. are kids impressed when i tell them i saw endpoint, 4 walls falling, outspoken, etc? probably not, but those shows were really special to me.

I get it, but it still maintains the same subculture vibe i.e. you see the same 100 people at every "cool" NYC hardcore show.

I think hardcore is in a very good place now. Going to Sound and Fury in LA.

Fuck Screeching Weasel. All of that Ramonescore garbage is adult contemporary punk rock.

Given the Municipal Waste mention, are you into Power Trip?

Yea, love Power Trip. Necrogoblicon too.

Screeching Weasel was different, solid Midwest band and the mental illness really seeps out of that music.

Minor Threat - Out of Step

Bad Brains - Rock for Light

Earth Crisis - Gomorrah's Season Ends

Converge - Petitioning the Empty Sky

Scream - Still Screaming

Would swap Damaged, Start Today, Break Down the Walls, or Blood, Sweat and No Tears if we're talking about pure influence and significance, but I give Converge extra points for being more original and less comfortably aligned with other parts of the existing hardcore and punk scenes than any of those other bands. Black Flag, GB, YOT and SOIA were all, in some sense, standard bearers/scene leaders and therefore making music that strived to represent the scene consensus at the time. Same could be said of Minor Threat as a standard bearer, but that's why I give Out of Step extra points, as it was a confrontation/refutation of a bunch of the early D.C. hardcore existing ideas about what the music should be and sound like, and really has the seeds of all the rest of the D.C. scene from proto-Emo through Fugazi. Scream I also give extra points for being the direct bridge to Nirvana, even though Grohl joined the band later.

earth crisis fucking sucks nigger dicks. i was into them for about five minutes when the firestorm 7" came out, but fuck EC for kicking off a trend of shit ass moshcore metal garbage, not to mention the cartoonish militant sXe vegan stuff.

veganism isn't a natural offshoot of sXe but a lot of sXe band members became vegan.

hanging out between baltimore and dc in the 90's was a magical time. discord records always had hot skater chicks doing promotional shit since there was no internet.

I don't think EC can be solely blamed for metalcore, since assholes like Snapcase were signed and releasing records on Victory in 92 and the Firestorm 7" and the main EC lineup didn't even drop until like early 94. But they definitely set the bar for militant self-parodic sXe veganism. By the late 90s most of their crowds were either openly mocking them about the sXe shit or at least rolling their eyes, though you would still encounter shitloads of absurd vegans. Still that one record was a feat, mainly bc Karl Crisis' voice sounded like nothing that should ever be able to come out of a human being.

I think I've told this story on XO before, I saw them play in Texas in like 99 in front of 30 or so people, 2 of whom were preachy vegans that were very disappointed in how poorly their "tabling" efforts before the show were received. We grilled steaks and pregamed with whiskey ahead of time, and I was in the back sitting at a table drinking beers and had my head shaved down to like a 2 guard and was with my buddy who was also shaved down to like a 1. After playing for a solid 90 minutes and giving it every bit as much as they gave any time I saw them on the east coast, the crowd was basically dead and had been standing still most of their set. Then Karl specifically called out "the two skinheads in the back" and gave this speech about how their pit is for everyone when they come to town. I have to admit I was touched, as was the rest of the crowd apparently. And they proceeded immediately to close with the title track from that album and that pit was easily one of the two or three best pits I've ever been in. Just one of those experiences at a show that means you have to love a band forever, even if they objectively kind of suck.

there were people doing it before EC, but the firestorm release marked a sea change in the sound of a lot of bands. in a very bad way.

i've posted about this before, but i saw what was supposed to be mouthpiece's last show at middlesex cc in nj in 1996. EC played (which prompted mouthpiece to play a "real" last show so they didn't play their last show with a metalcore shit band). that guy sean mccabe from crud is a cult/ink and dagger threw yogurt at EC and a guy stagedove wearing a fur coat. a big fight broke out. it was hilarious.

I can sign off on EC being a big accelerant of the douchey metal without solos turn in 90s hardcore.

Imagine if we had cell phones then. I would watch that show with the yogurt (which was a legend I remeber hearing at the time in the 90s) as a youtube video like 10x a day every day for the rest of my life.

I think there's an argument to be made that veganism isn't where it is today without Earth Crisis. They somewhat legitimized that crunchy hippie bullshit by pumping it into hardcore.

Notwithstanding the goofy vsxe nonsense, I'm a fan. I'll even ride for Slither.

Never heard of Fury before this thread. Gave it a quick listen and it sounds like it's a little too melodic/California for my tastes. Judge I definitely remember from back in the day, but I wasn't a huge NYHC fan, but when I wanted NYHC I wanted a maximalist version, so other than EC or the classical founding fathers like GB and YoT the only other band I really listened to a lot was 25taLife, mostly ironically at first, though eventually it became unironic.

he dated an ex girlfriend of mine for a long time. he is insane and also very stupid. that rick ta life on a horse thing is hilarious.

i am fb friends with him, and i was in cleveland around xmas a few years ago with my ex wife. i was drunk and bored in the hotel room, and i made a status update that said "RIP ezec, can't believe he's dead." (if you don't know, ezec sings for this band called crown of thornz in addition to having a ridiculous rap "career" and is well known as a DMS "hitman." i think he's killed people).

the two of them hate each other, and i woke up the next morning to rick ta life's status update about ezec dying of a drug overdose, and fuck that piece of shit, etc. i then saw ezec firing shit back at him on instagram. i quickly deleted that status update.

Getting this back on track. Was the 2000s the weakest decade for hardcore? Some classic albums from Modern Life is War, Have Heart, Blacklisted, and TUI - but not much going on in the second/third tiers imo. Also, wild that some of the biggest bands of the decade in any genre had clear links to DIY hardcore (Fallout Boy, Thursday, AFI, MCR, etc.)

i think it sucked. i was only peripherally involved but it seemed to be getting wack.

the early 90s (when i got into it), in retrospect, was a really interesting time. lots of different styles of music being played. the youth crew bands were fizzling out/kinda still on the scene. shows were essentially how they had been at the start of hardcore, for the most part - held at churches/VFW halls or a very select few clubs (930, safari, tune inn, city gardens, etc.)

Early 90s is super interesting, especially taking into account post-youth crew bands not really knowing what to do and veering into some laughable directions.

Have Heart did DIY venues on their last tour in 09. Fast forward ten years and their reunion is possibly the largest hardcore show in history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et5Tjhefs-g

Also, this might be my favorite 00s album - straight up Embrace/Rev Summer worship recorded at Inner Ear done incredibly well: https://youtu.be/Jf-AXuBYnfo

I like that second link. Man I miss hc in the 90s. The music that was good was really great. The scene was also still really small. My friends and I would go out of state for shoes with no place to stay and meet people there and wind up staying at some kid’s house with his mom cooking us breakfast or something like that.

Hc seems way bigger now. I guess that’s good in a way but I think it lost something.

That End of a Year album was one of the last great Revelation releases. Their next one on Deathwish is even better: https://youtu.be/Uba9z36frBo

Then the guitarist has a mental breakdown and leaves the tour to go see an online girlfriend in Seattle (who quickly dumps him). The group reformats into Self Defense Family doing very different Lungfish worship:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Imn81ZysOk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv-7wI84wxs (this album has a 40 minute interview with Jeanna Fine)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7cETW2E3VU (lead singer is one of the best frontmen in hardcore today - live shows turn into weird standup sets)

Really good. Possibly my favorite band now.

Doesn't seem like your scene, but any good stories about 90s emo/emocore/emoviolence? Think Orchid/Jerome's Dream/Reversal of Man/Saetia, etc. Was into the next generation of this ("SKRAMZ") for a minute in the mid-00s (Daitro, Hot Cross, Ampere, Kidcrash, etc.) and lot of good messageboard drama on VLV. Here's the story in question:

"I've heard of this show by two 90s hardcore bands being talked on various message boards that took place in Pittsburgh.

"Rent America are responsible for the most absurd performance I saw of this era. They took awhile to set up, then they literally played a blast beat for like two seconds, and then they were all on the floor crying and rolling and crawling around. No more music was played. Also, the singer made a speech about refusing to use a microphone because it was elitist and placed him above the crowd before they played, so for the two seconds they played he was just yelling into the air. They were just lying on the floor crying for awhile, and then one of them started yelling “the worms…the worms..oh my god…the worms” and made this teary eyed speech about how because of the human race putting concrete and asphalt all over the earth when it rains the worms come out and can’t find their way back to the earth and die in the sun on the concrete. At this point, people just started laughing and the rest of the set was spent by Rent America yelling at the crowd for not taking them seriously and about how it took so much guts to show that emotion in front of a crowd.

After that, Agnes Moraine’s Autobiography played and took forever to set up. The guitarist tuned for 20 minutes, then they played half a song, and he threw his guitar across the room and fell on the floor crying. I walked out at that point."

Oh yeah yogurt story is legendary. Loved how all these different bands kept getting lumped together on shows back then because HARDCORE. What was the strangest bill you saw back in the day?

I missed 90s hardcore, but strangest mix for me was Blood Brothers (pre-recording with Ross Robinson - in their lofi sasscore phase), Christensen (late-era Rev band that was a shameless ATDI rip-off), American Nightmare (top dogs at the time), and Glassjaw (just before the major label album came out). Show was in the upstairs room of the Quest in Minneapolis - a club that used to be owned by Prince and kept all the decor: shitty water fountain, fake trees on the side of the stage, bad murals on the walls. Was shut down years later after the "urban nights" resulted in too many shootings.

shelter, 108, assuck, rorschach and hoover or lincoln (i forget which of those two). totally different sounds. the 90s were pretty much like that - eclectic.

that yogurt thing was so surreal to watch.

The LP rips. These kids are literally 18-20 year old and already playing national tours and putting out records on Run For Cover (large-ish indie label). Gives me hope for the generation for whom Title Fight was the gateway band.

Here's their other band - a bit of a different direction but also pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGs-z1hWdeY

just ordered the LP from revelation (some ltd edition yellow vinyl shit that is exclusive to rev)

also, holy shit at that anxious band. from the sound to the layout of the 7" i'd believe you if you told me this was an emo record that came out in 1993.

Anxious are on Run For Cover now and went in a more 90s alternative direction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6TPmcuUd9M

I saw them open for Wicca Phase (emo rapper, wrote the best Tigers Jaw songs) and they were dope. Good dudes, backed hard.

Knocked Loose did a cool thing for their new EP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70cXs8hht_Q

They're arguably the other biggest band in hardcore next to Turnstile. Cool Louisville kids who do a lot for the scene. Too metal for me, but some jams in there.

Also have the best mosh call in modern hardcore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doyQH0GJPpw

Caught Angel Du$t earlier this week. Justice (ex-TUI) and 3 Turnstile doods (although they were replaced with ringers at the show) doing Lemonheads-style indie pop. Great songwriting, set ended with Justice throwing a guitar into the audience.

New album is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMnFxpHndgs

philly has a huge hardcore scene but never (at least through the late 90s, early 2000s when i started to phase out of the scene) really had any bands identified with the city. i always found that strange.

although a bunch of southern new jersey bands (mouthpiece, lifetime, resurrection) might as well be considered philly.

i was at a diner with the kids this morning and had on a Warzone hoodie. A guy got up to leave and pay his check and he said "hey, nice shirt" and i said oh thanks. he was a huge burly dude who looked like a laborer, and he had a krsna tail on his head (you know, where the whole head is shaved except that part on the very back).

well after the guy left, i asked the waitress for the check and she said that guy had paid it because it was thanksgiving. pretty cool story, bro.

the hoodie was filthy, my hair was all over the place and i haven't shaved for a week and am wearing sweatpants so maybe the guy thought i was down and out and a poor. i don't think he saw the $400 Barbour coat i was sitting on, lols. either way, hardcore family nigger.

Would've been a good EP - remember really liking half the songs, but haven't listened in a while. International Noise Conspiracy and the reunion were laughable.

Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent was dope.

not familiar with rotten sound. can u link to their work?

i never loved refused all that much. i did see them a few times in 1995-96. rate me.

No one under 30 cares about Fugazi.

Dope that you saw refused when they played straightforward 90s hardcore. Re-listened to Shape of Punk to Come and it's not very good.

Honestly not that many people in the hardcore scene cares too much about fugazi when I was a teenager.

I know shape of punk to come is revered as some kind of masterpiece but I never cared about that band much. I remember being kind of offended that whenever I’d see them their singer would go on and on about how terrible the US was.
