also, can i just vent here. the shakespeare in DC is only doing ONE shakespeare production this season (out of 6), and it's his shortest one (comedy of errors).

when i started going back in 2008/09, they did 3-4 shakespeares per season, then they changed art directors or whatever a few years ago and went with this flaming queer. he started doing a minimum of one musical per season, cut down to 2 shakespeare. now they're doing one.

That's really frustrating to hear. Who the fuck goes to DC to see a musical, lol? Although Comedy of Errors is at least one that really benefits from being staged--it's very farcical even by the standards of Shakespeare's comedies and there's a lot of collateral comedic business that good actors and direction can wring out of an already funny script.

Do you like Measure for Measure? I think that's the most prestigious Shakespeare play. Although I'm ashamed to admit I haven't actually *read* any Shakespeare in years at this point; need to change that.

i've actually seen CoE twice before. once at the shakespeare, once at the folger. it's always a really good production. one of my favorite recent ones was much ado at the shakespeare in late 2022. it was set at a cable news network, and during one scene one of the characters was railing lines of coke.

i haven't read measure for measure in a long time. i unfortunately had a ticket for it at the shakespeare but was very bad off with substance abuse and skipped it.

i'm gonna get a ticket to the CoE production but no more subscriptions at that place.

folger is still holding it down with 2/3 per season being shakespeare.

As for English classes--to be sure, I was reading Shakespeare by age 8 and generally understanding the plots, etc., but it's not like there wasn't still a ton of nuance to unpack etc. So I mostly amused myself in English classes by bringing a lot of extracurricular knowledge of literary theory, etc. to bear on my assignments.

Also--there were a ton of smart people at my high school and while I was probably one of the smartest overall, there were legitimate math prodigies there, and plenty of people on the humanities side of things who were very smart/curious as well.
