How does this even happen? I hear stories about how so many people have credit card debt. But I always wonder who are they? And how?
Discuss.

If you're living paycheck to paycheck on a low income, you aren't saving money. Then you get a car repair bill and need to put a thousand on the credit card, which has to happen so you can get to work. But living paycheck to paycheck means there's never that spare thousand as you have to pay the rent first. And it begins. Then the interest mounts.
I'm not unsympathetic. Though doubtlessly plenty is due to impulsive spending. It was always ingrained in me to never spend money I didn't have, even as a broke college kid with a weekly budget of $50, so watching those who charged vacations thinking they'd pay it off later always seemed like abusing a system that ultimately costs everyone more money.
*amazing I could eat well for less than 50 a week in the early 2000s. Today we spend 20k+ a month as a family without even blinking.

official inflation figures are flame. the improvement in my income vs QOL over the years in mindblowingly bad.
when i was a kid, shopping mall hairdressers and retail clerks owned houses. i have no idea how these people eat now considering how much i spend to live fairly modestly.

Tons of reasons people probably tell themselves this but once you’re used to a lifestyle it’s tough to stop. Lots of women feel like they need to look their best and are always buying expensive shit to signal, assume some rich dude will come save them eventually. Lots of dudes doing the same thing by trying to signal to some birdbrain that they have cash and will take care of them.
Everyone always assumes they’re going to make more eventually and pay it down and don’t want to suffer in the interim.
And some people legit just suffer unfortunate setbacks and can’t easily reduce expenses enough to cover even if they try, wind up in debt

This really isn't hard to understand if you've met any working class people who live paycheck to paycheck and who do not have friend or family circles who are able or would be willing to lend them money in an emergency. For most of these type of people, a credit card is the only backup financial liquidity they have to get out of an unplanned expenditure.
Then you add in people who are compulsive spenders and people who are otherwise too naive to understand how the system works (e.g. when I lived in ARE country, became regular at a bar that employed a bar hand with a disability who didn't seem to understand he could probably qualify for welfare), along with a shitty economy like we have now and boom. Trillions in CC debt.

its pretty easy to rack up a ton of debt if you're in a high COL area
lots of americans aren't making enough to cover their monthly expenses and are racking up CC debt to bridge the gap
