there are very few actual communists in the united states. the soviets and maoist chinese were the main backers of communist political groups as well as far left radical student activism in the US; with them gone, it has basically ceased to exist as anything but pure signal. where communism crops up, it does so an extreme response of political positioning against---at present---mismanagement and neglect of the population by the neoliberal elite.

the chinese still work off of many of the same linkages set in place by earlier CCP spy and influence networks, but chinese cash atm goes towards progressive extremism in all of its various forms. even amongst student radicals, until very recently with the palestinian third worldist agitation, people involved typically shied away from "proper" communist causes afaik.
