Gas gangrene is a severe muscle infection caused mainly by Clostridium bacteria, named for the gas bubbles that form beneath the skin.
Clostridium bacteria thrive in oxygen-deprived, necrotic tissue, causing severe pain, swelling, tissue discolouration and a cracking sensation for the patient as gas moves.
Usually, gangrene results from poor blood supply, does not involve bacterial toxins or gas formation, and develops much more slowly than gas gangrene.
The infection usually follows traumatic injuries, like deep gunshot or blast wounds, particularly when medical care is delayed, as is common in Ukraine.
“We have people coming into the hospital who’ve been injured for a couple of weeks, just sitting at underground stabilisation points, being kept alive as best we can,” said Alex.
“Gas gangrene is something you learn about in school… In Ukraine, though, you see it, because people are sitting with these types of wounds and not getting proper care – you simply can’t move them back to a hospital fast enough to treat them properly.”
