You can still get by with the 12600k if you intend to use DDR4 only, but with DDR5 supplies tightening, you want to ensure any DDR5 RAM you buy works with your PC. The improved integrated memory controller in the 14th gen Intels does that.
This same CPU will also work fine with DDR4 if you want to save money and go that route. DDR4 is about half the cost of DDR5 right now
