They don’t need to destroy the buried enrichment facilities. They just need to deny access and try to kill the existing personnel. Why not just destroy the entrances? Maintain surveillance over the site to identify any hidden access points for follow up targeting. If they try to gain entrance again, target the construction site (and try to kill any personnel working on it). Autonomous anti personnel and anti material drones could also be deployed on site to harass people trying to gain entrance.

You could use cruise or ballistic missiles for this. You wouldn’t be trying to drop bunker busters.

I meant for targeting entrances. Autonomous small drones for vehicle targeting could be brought in with cruise missile, smuggled in, or dropped by plane. A few thousand would cause a lot of problems for anyone trying to make use of the facility.

What exactly constitutes an "entrance" here? Do you think there's a grand hallway and a lobby where nuclear physicists clock in for their shifts? Hezbollah hired North Korea to build its tunnels, and I'm pretty sure Iran has better bunkers than Hezbollah.

There is a hole in the earth that vehicles and personel have to pass through to gain entrance. This can’t be buried. If it gets turned into rubble, how do they get in?

That hole in the earth can be 30 stories underground. The driveway running to it can do corkscrew loops through tunnels. There can be severael other driveways that lead to dead ends. You have no idea.

Small drones have limited air time and can be easily neutralized if you know their location.

You need like a Predator drone to do continuous loitering of the entrances. Then you need combat air patrol to protect them against other aircraft or to suppress air defense systems

This is a retarded idea, on par with XO's "genius" idea of pumping seawater into Gaza tunnels

I wasn’t thinking about loitering drones. I was thinking ones that would land and run a low power motion detection for extended periods. Once an event is triggered, they would then attack or signal other units to do so. You could easily build units that surveil areas for months. Once batteries are depleted, replace them with new units.

The obstacle the Iranians have is that entrances are precious, easily observed and can’t be rebuilt faster than they are destroyed.

What are the chances the Iranians will figure this out? You could prob pull this off once and then they'll have every goatherder out in the desert sweeping the place constantly for drones in low power mode.

This is like the pager attack; it probably works once, maaaybe twice (depending on how retarded the OpSec of the recipients are)

Also with regards to destroying "precious" entrances. If there's anything the Iranians dont have a shortage of is illiterate workers to clear shit up and build the entrance again

Obviously it would be a major priority to eliminate the drones but there is an issue of scalability. Small drones are cheap and be manufactured at scale. If you just want something that can kill a person, a few grams of a shaped charge delivered to the head will do. You are probably looking at a few hundred dollars to maybe a thousand per kill if you wanted to litter the landscape with small anti personnel drones that would be activated by motion sensing command units. The Israelis could create a real hassle for them reasonably cheaply. It’s a flying minefield.

You need to think about how radios work at some point. Most of the drones we fly are linked up to a ground installation or aircraft in the vicinity. There is nowhere near Tehran we can launch those. Any drone that goes to Tehran can only communicate with satellites.

There's a significant difference between mines and drones. The flying minefield you speak of--as the Ukrainian battlefield has shown--still requires maintenance/guidance from units close by whereas mines are bury and forget.

I guess in theory you could create thousands of little drones that autonomously attack Habibi the goatherder, but strategically WTF does that accomplish? It would kill a bunch of nobodies and further inflame Iran w/o gain. Any lightly armored vehicle would swat away the few grams of shaped charges - unlike mines drones capable of defeating heavier vehicles require closer support

Any drone needs to be able to relay info back to the user, otherwise it's less than worthless. Suppose you have an autonomous drone with AI that can perfectly identify Iranian bunkers with no user input, and it hits its target. What good is that if the user lost contact with it?

The US military itself builds underground now. Everywhere we build out, we build down. We do this to protect our shit. We believe it works.

If you ask are military to asses the situation, they're going to rattle off a thousand reasons why digging works. They're not going to say "it works everywhere besides Iran."

It works to protect what is inside but it doesn’t stop someone from sealing it up. It’s a tunnel. Tunnels can be made to collapse.

There are redundancies out the ass. They're not stupid enough to leave a single opening someone can seal up. The Vietcong might have 50 entrances to the same tunnel complex, and that was 60 years ago.

Israel is starting to get the gravity of the situation vis a vis the posture of its opponents and is looking for a superior path out as far as I can tell

These are presumably strategic choices and not indicative of a lack of capabilities
