...in order to function accurately. I did not realize this until today, but it makes sense.

In other words: they have to compensate for (among other things) the fact that time moves more slowly for the satellites than it does on earth due to the rate of speed at which the satellites are moving.

Fma brothers, we live in crazy times.

No I'm not - I just hadn't thought about it. Time dilation is one of those things that is generally incompatible with our everyday understanding of our place in the universe and how we relate to the world. It's kind of wild that such a mundane aspect of everyday life requires us to rely on assumptions that most ordinary people would struggle to understand and/or reconcile with their existing world view.

EDIT: should add: 20% or more of the people using GPS satellite technologies in their everyday lives in this country still believe in young earth creationism. The discontinuity is remarkable.

A fantastic experiment would be to try selling time dilation to proles on the street, just as an experiment. Give it your best like a Jehovah's witness with pre-printed literature. See what percentage are ready to believe what you're telling them.

crazy, isn't it? I read GPS would be around ~6miles off if they didn't compensate for those effects

Indeed. And yet the vast majority of people don't realize just how crazy they are.

They are, in fact, crazier than magnets.
