big assad fan luis, you know me, lion of damascus' top guy, going to tell it straight about his enemies

that wasn't al qaeda. there were like, not flame, 100+ militias operating throughout all of that and they all had different affiliations. the big ones were ISIS linked ones (Saudi/Qatar backed, CIA support) and iirc HTS which was a lib CIA one mostly funded through Emirati money

al qaeda hasn't really meaningfully existed since the fall of OBL and the ISI approved dissolution of their network in pakistan, and arguably it didn't really exist as we thought of it even before it. one of the books i read by one of Rumsfelds' guys after the fact proferred the idea that AQ was basically like a sort of forum or admin group for salafi and other fundamentalist groups to meet and share resources but didn't really have many "hard" resources or operations of their own. it made a good propaganda target because it was some James Bond legion of evil type shit but wasn't directly linked to the guys killing US affiliated forces in the middle east. you could go to an AQ meet up and say "i hate israel and secularized arabs" and some saudi or qatari princeling would dump a few million SRs into whatever you were working on back in your goat village, but it wasn't like a real "set" militant group directly pulling operations on the ground for the most part afaik

"Ghost Wars", one of the best books i recall on GWOT, talked about this some

wrt al qaeda's ubiquity i'd say "Bush's people lied about this" then but by all accounts it seems like they didn't know either, which is a very unsatisfying answer. most of the anti-fundamentalist doctrine had to be written and rewritten on the battlefields as nobody in the DoD at the time save a few old hands really seemed to know what they were getting into

some of the generals and BCs legitimately thought, in iraq, that we'd do enough damage to saddam and his generals would give him up and it'd be some quaint railcar treaty of versailles victory. most of them didn't see that governments over there work more like ethnic gangs and that there wasn't any real government structure outside of saddam's ba'athists to keep a continuity of government going or what have you

this is an aside but it's been on my mind with cheney's death today

tyft. I think the media often described hts as al qaeda in Syria, but wouldn’t surprise me if that’s completely inaccurate. that ghost wars book was on my radar so I’ll take a look

it's a really informative book and the guy presents a lot of the concepts involved in american entanglements in the middle east without much bias, very clear eyed, and the portrait he paints shows a very grey situation covered in fog of war that left everybody involved, NATO/US and militants alike, extremely confused about what was actually going on

the whole push towards 5G type strategic thinking by the DoD was a direct result of that, in a sense, stuff like Palantir is a direct response to the murkiness and informational failures in how those wars were planned and prosecuted

"we need to strive for perfect logistics" which was the consensus at the end of WW2 and throughout vietnam to "we need to strive for perfect information"

they may be al qaeda linked but that doesn't mean much on its own these days

its like saying "the shooter was AAA linked" because they found his triple a subscription card in his wallet. OBL and his circle were largely responsible for trying to turn AQ into more than a patronage network and with his death, afaik, it mostly reverted back to that, a patronage network

julani in particular cut his chops as an anti-baathist revolutionary in iraq but there were a plethora of groups doing that and the US had too much prohibitive tape around AQ linked guys to really work with them at the time

its a weird swamp of connections though and some of those syrian militias were very reminiscent of the situation with the anti-soviet islamists in afghanistan

those are the trainers and "professional jihadis"

if you watched the videos from the fall of syria you could see those guys here and there and they stood out in the rolls because they had visibly good trigger discipline, stood straight, didn't stop to loot, looked well fed and serious, but most of the militants were just religious/ethnic gangs of sheep herders there to loot and rape the comparatively wealthy alawite-run cities

Isn’t it odd that ISIS never bothered attacking Israel. For a while, they sustained a giant-ass caliphate next door. But for some reason forgot to do anything in Israel.
