Ackshually who knows. Did Russia lose by finland and sweden joining Nato and the end of its energy relationship with Germany? Or did it win by achieving closer ties to china?
Does Ukraine "lose" by losing most of the Donbas or does it win by having a closer relationship with west Europe?
Is the loss of Ukrainian combatants and refugees irreparable or will it be the turning point for a national identity that keeps the country viable, instead of being a russian shithole like the donbas republics or chechnya? Vietnam lost 25% of its prewar population and is now more successful and independent of China and the US than it would have been in the absence of a war.
I don't think you can give a verdict on any of this right now. But no one estimated prewar that Ukraine would be capable of fighting to a WWI standstill.
