It's not about what it accomplishes. They just assume that WaPo is one of "theirs" and not endorsing her is a huge betrayal for them.
It would be like a longtime listener of Tucker Carlson getting enraged because he refused to endorse either candidate.

They view these newspapers as the truth and final word of everything. Its lib gospel. If the newspapers suddenly started saying things they didn't agree with it becomes utterly confusing.
However they have been wary of Bezos ownership for awhile so in their minds they can talk themselves down over this. NYT would be a different story.

Because the people who pay for this shit have spent 2 years reading article after article that "Trump is an existential threat to democracy."
Then teh WashPo is like "vote for who you want"
